Fans of Ncuti Gatwa’s “Sex Education” character, Eric Effiong, are in for some upsetting news: the upcoming fourth season of “Sex Education” will seemingly be his last. On Feb. 8, Gatwa posted a photo of his trailer’s door on Instagram with the caption, “Last day. Last time. Bye bubs, thank you for all the lessons and for all the strength.”
While Gatwa didn’t offer any more details about his future on “Sex Education,” his caption suggests that season four will be Otis’s gutsy, french-horn-playing, pop-music-loving best friend’s last on the hit Netflix show.
Why Is Ncuti Gatwa Leaving “Sex Education”?
Based on Gatwa’s Instagram caption, it doesn’t appear his exit from “Sex Education” has anything to do with a lack of love for the show and his character. In fact, it seems like Eric has helped Gatwa grow as a person and actor.
Chances are the reason Gatwa had to step away from “Sex Education” is because he’s been locking down exciting roles in other major projects that he has to focus on. Not only is he starring in Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” movie, which is due out in theaters on July 21, but he’ll also be taking on the mantle of the 15th doctor in the hit BBC show “Doctor Who.” While it’s unclear when Gatwa will officially take over the TARDIS, it will be after the return of the fan-favorite 10th Doctor, David Tennant, in a special three-episode event in November.
Looks like fans will be cherishing every moment Gatwa is on screen in “Sex Education” season four, which will likely hit Netflix in the second half of 2023.
