Ryan Murphy’s The Prom is full of lavish, sparkly, and heartfelt zazz that’ll leave you wanting to watch even more of it after its two-hour run. Murphy’s prints are all over Netflix’s expansive library – you’ve got American Horror Story, The Politician, and, of course, Glee, the snappy, tunes-filled high school drama that shares pretty similar themes with The Prom. You don’t need to invest your time and energy into an entire television show, though. Easy A
Easy A isn’t a musical per se, but it shares The Prom‘s cheeky humor and heart in its modern-day The Scarlet Letter adaptation. We follow the misadventures of Olive, a high school student who creates a lucrative business out of pretending to hook up with her classmates.

The Producers
Starring Matthew Broderick and Uma Thurman, this 2005 take of the 1967 classic follows a desperate producer who tries to scam investors by putting together a flop of a show. It’s somewhat similar to how the Broadway stars hatch up a plan to use Emma’s story for good PR, except a little more nefarious, of course.

The Boys in the Band
Directed by Joe Mantello, who also coordinated a stage production of the original play, The Boys in the Band follows a group of gay men (including one character portrayed by The Prom‘s Andrew Rannells) who get together for a party in New York City. Ryan Murphy, who directed The Prom, also happens to be a co-producer for the movie.

Moulin Rouge!
Nicole Kidman has definitely been been in the musical film scene long before she charmed us in The Prom, most prominently in Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge! across Ewan McGregor. Kidman portrays Satine, cabaret actress and courtesan who falls for a poor writer named Christian (McGregor), although her manager has set her up with the wealthy Duke (Richard Roxburgh).

Chicago
Nicole Kidman‘s Angie very much wants to play Roxie Hart in Chicago, a Broadway classic that’s also a successful musical movie. The film stars Kidman’s own contemporaries, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Renée Zellweger, respectively as Velma Kelly and Roxie Hart, two women who await a 1920s Chicago trial for murder.
