Melody Thornton On How The Masked Singer Helped Her Find Her Voice After The Pussycat Dolls
Last night, after a wild season, The Masked Singer Australia came to an end.
It was a season full of surprises, with stars such as Michelle Williams and Emma Watkins taking to the stage to perform some catchy hits.
However, despite the sheer talent radiating off each of the Masks, only three characters made it to the Grand Finale.
Rooster, Snapdragon and Mirrorball were the final three, and after Rooster and Snapdragon were revealed to be Hugh Sheridan and Sheldon Riley respectively, Mirrorball was crowned the winner.
There were plenty of guesses thrown around as to who Mirrorball could be, and as she removed her giant disco ball head, it was revealed to be Melody Thornton from The Pussycat Dolls.
Speaking to POPSUGAR Australia, the singer couldn’t quite believe it, saying she was still on a high.
“I’m very happy; it’s so cool!” she said. “Singing with a mask on, and no one knows it’s you is such a surreal experience, and then to win it, it’s wow.”
Thornton found fame through the girl group The Pussycat Dolls, and now, she’s embarking on a solo career.
Her time on The Masked Singer Australia not only propelled her into the spotlight but it gave her a boost of confidence.
Having been so used to performing with a group of women over the course of her career, The Masked Singer Australia proved that Melody could hold her own.
“I was a part of [The Pussycat Dolls], and it was like, ‘Can she sing? Can she not? If she could, how come she didn’t?’ And so when people were voting for Mirrorball, they were voting for me!
“They were voting for my voice, so it was really neat to know that all I have to do is get up there and sing and try my best.”
Melody is no stranger to performing, and throughout her time in the music industry, she’s perfected not only her voice but her dancing skills too.
However, it’s no secret that those masks are heavy, and singing and dancing while wearing them is no easy feat.
“I would rehearse without the mask on, and then I would put the head of the mask on and realise, oh, I can’t move my neck!”
“I had limited visibility, so I would create markers on the stage by counting the lights — it was a good experience,” she said.
This isn’t the last time you’ll be hearing from Melody, with the star getting ready to tour the UK with the musical The Bodyguard.
