LeBron James’s big year continues. After making history as the NBA’s all-time leading scorer and producing a star-studded remake of “House Party,” the 38-year-old Los Angeles Laker’s 2009 “Shooting Stars” book is being turned into a movie.
On March 28, Peacock released a first look at the upcoming biopic, which is inspired by the real-life story of how James and his childhood best friends overcame several obstacles and became the top high school basketball team in the country. “People think they know my story, but this is our story,” James says in a voiceover in the first-look teaser trailer. “This is how I met my brothers and how we became family.”
Set in the 1990s, “Shooting Stars” centers on the years when James and his friends declared themselves the “Fab Four” of their high school basketball team. According to Peacock, “from the moment we meet them, we realize this group of friends, under the guidance of Coach Dru Joyce (Wood Harris) is connected by more than basketball.” So when a coach threatens to separate them by putting Lil Dru (Caleb McLaughlin) in junior varsity, the entire group switches over to a predominantly white Catholic school to be able to play at the varsity level together. The film follows the boys as they’re tested both on and off the court in their journey to become national champions. Luckily, they have a new coach by their side who is “seeking redemption of his own.”
In a second teaser, released on April 24, James and his friends reflect on their high school experience. “A lot of memories in this gym. How we put banners up, how we won ball games,” James says. “This is our story.”
