Joe Alwyn Speaks Out for the First Time About His Breakup with Taylor Swift
Joe Alwyn has finally opened up about his breakup with Taylor Swift, giving fans a glimpse into his experience dealing with the media frenzy that followed.
The British actor got real about his experience during an interview with The Sunday Times Style Magazine, marking the first time he’s spoken about their April 2023 split. When asked about Swift’s latest album, The Tortured Poets Department, which many believe is about their breakup, Alwyn didn’t shy away from addressing the rumours.
“I would hope that anyone and everyone can empathise and understand the difficulties that come with the end of a long, loving, fully committed relationship of over six and a half years,” he told the magazine. “That is a hard thing to navigate. What is unusual and abnormal in this situation is that, one week later, it’s suddenly in the public domain and the outside world is able to weigh in.”
Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn Started Dating in 2016
Swift and Alwyn began dating in 2016 after reportedly meeting at the Met Gala that year. The pair kept their relationship fairly quiet over the years, though they occasionally commented on their romance. Alwyn also helped Swift write some of her songs on her albums Folklore, Evermore, and Midnights under the pseudonym William Bowery. Fans speculated that this was at Alwyn’s request, given Swift’s history of public relationships, but Alwyn set the record straight.
“As everyone knows, we together — both of us, mutually — decided to keep the more private details of our relationship private,” he explained. “It was never something to commodify and I see no reason to change that now.”
News of their split came to light in April 2023, reportedly due to “differences in their personalities”. Swift and Alwyn have “had rough patches before and always worked things out, so friends thought they would take some time apart but eventually come back together,” the source told People, but “ultimately” they “weren’t the right fit for one another”.
Joe Alwyn Is Now In “A Great Place”
Despite their efforts to stay private, fan theories have continued well into 2024, especially with Swift’s latest album release. Many are convinced that songs like Fresh Out the Slammer and So Long, London are about Alwyn, and headlines are buzzing with possible lyric references.
“There is always going to be a gap between what is known and what is said,” Alwyn added. He also mentioned that the breakup was over a year ago and that he’s in a much better place now. “I feel fortunate to be in a really great place in my life — professionally and personally.”
