Jessica Chastain walked the red carpet at the 2023 Tony Awards with a very special person by her side – her grandma, Marilyn Herst. The duo smiled together as they posed for photos before entering the ceremony.
Chastain wore a sunshine yellow gown with a matching cape, while her grandma opted for a dove gray dress with a matching shawl. Also at the ceremony with Chastain was her husband Gian Luca Passi de Preposulo. The couple, who wed in 2017 and share two daughters, were photographed outside of the United Palace Theater in NYC, where this year’s awards ceremony is being held.
Chastain is nominated for her starring role in the revival of Henrik Ibsen’s feminist classic, “A Doll’s House.” If she wins Sunday night, the Oscar winner will be halfway to an EGOT.
Back in May, Chastain opened up about what her grandma and her mom, Jerri Chastain, sacrificed to raise her and support her career during an interview on the Today Show. When she first moved to New York, she revealed, her grandma would send her clothing from TJ Maxx in the mail.
“My mom and my grandmother really were there for me and made sacrifices in their lives,” she continued, and she related the price they paid as women to the themes of “A Doll’s House.” “I think about my mom and my grandma and a lot of women in my family, and I was very aware when I was a teenager what was lost for them and what they were unable to achieve,” she explained. “And I never wanted to be a part of that, and I don’t want any other woman to be a part of that. . . . I’m very grateful to them for helping me on my way, and I hope to pay it forward.”
