Aubrey Plaza and Jenna Ortega have broken the curse of notoriously cringe award show presenter skits. The duo took the stage together at the 2023 SAG Awards on Feb. 26 and played into their shared deadpan tendencies while announcing Sam Elliott as the winner of outstanding performance by a male actor in a television movie or limited series.
After standing in silence and eerily peering out into the audience for several moments, Plaza said, “I don’t know why they paired us up together,” to which Ortega responded, “Yeah I know, we have nothing in common.” With nary a smile in sight, Plaza added, “We should find the people who did this,” before the pair recited in unison, “And curse their families and watch as misfortune follows their bloodline for the next seven generations.” The whole audience was in stitches over their sullen delivery, including Adam Sandler and Angela Bassett, who were spotted cracking up in their seats.
“I’m down. We’ll just kill everybody with our eyes.”
The bit landed with fans watching from home too, as Twitter erupted into a flurry of demands for Plaza and Ortega to costar in a project as soon as humanly possible. We’d personally love to see Plaza join the “Wednesday” season two cast as a distant Addams family cousin who comes to Nevermore to help track down Wednesday’s mysterious stalker. Or perhaps the pair could portray witchy sisters in a Halloween horror movie? Plaza seems open to the idea of working with Ortega in the future, telling Entertainment Tonight, “I’m down. We’ll just kill everybody with our eyes.”
It was a big night for both actors at the SAG Awards. Ortega was nominated for best performance by a female actor in a comedy series, while Plaza and the rest of “The White Lotus” cast won best performance by an ensemble in a drama series. Plaza also reunited with “Parks and Recreation” costars Amy Poehler and Adam Scott, who played Leslie Knope and Ben Wyatt in the NBC series, respectively. They also both wore stunning dresses on the red carpet: Ortega chose a black strapless Atelier Versace gown, while Plaza had on a bronze Michael Kors Collection dress.
Read ahead to watch Ortega and Plaza’s twinning moment at the SAGs, and to the Hollywood gods, if you’re listening: please answer our prayers and cast these two in a movie soon.
