As life slowly starts to return to “normal”, we can look forward to award season looking more like it used to.
One of those annual events will be the SAG (Screen Actors Guild) awards which will officially return to an in-person live event in 2022. This will surely be a welcome change after 2021’s pre-recorded ceremony which was devoid of a red carpet, host or set. Instead, the show consisted of comedic sketches mixed in with the SAG Awards’ signature “I Am An Actor” mini-speeches from performers and, of course, the “In Memoriam” segment.
The 28th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will take place on February 27, 2022 — the date originally reserved for the Oscars, which will now occur on March 27.
The SAG ceremony will be broadcast simultaneously on US networks TNT and TBS at 8pm ET so Australian audiences should be able to tune in via live stream at that time. There’s also the possibility that Foxtel or one of the free-to-air Aussie channels will air the awards show, but nothing has been confirmed as yet.
As for which films and television shows will be in the running for the 2022 nods, the submission criteria states that the eligibility window of airdate or premiere must be between March 1, 2021, and December 31, 2021.
This means that films such as In the Heights and Cruella could definitely be in with a shot at being nominated, while acclaimed TV series like Mare of Easttown and The Underground Railroad could also be recognised. However, the eligibility window means that beloved series such as It’s a Sin and Lupin will not qualify for nomination, despite their popularity.
Meanwhile, our favourite hoodie wearer — Jason Sudeikis, who this year took home the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series for his Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso — could certainly be in with another shot at glory, with season two of the heartwarming comedy landing on the streamer on July 23rd.
