The Axe Murders of Villisca

The Shining
A writer’s decision to spend the winter at a deserted hotel with his wife and son majorly backfires when it becomes clear that they’re definitely not alone in the grand building – but they’re not accompanied by the living, either.
Pet Sematary
If you count the original Stephen King adaptation among your favorite horror films, we hope you caught the remake starring Jason Clarke and John Lithgow. Whatever you do, don’t go near the cemetery.
Painkillers
A car crash doesn’t just take a man’s son in this dark film, it also leaves him in intense pain. He soon discovers that the only thing that can ease his pain is the taste of human blood.
The Oath
The White House declares that all citizens must sign an oath of loyalty to the country before Thanksgiving in this political satire. This new policy leads to a bloody holiday for one all-American family as their argument gets out of control.
Inside
This French movie turns Christmas Eve into a nightmare for a pregnant widow. The mom-to-be ends up being terrorized by a scissor-wielding psychopath who wants the woman’s baby for herself.
The Cabin in the Woods
On the surface, The Cabin in the Woods looks like a typical slasher film. A group of easily classified teens – the jock, the prom queen, the stoner – head to a cabin for some spring break fun. However, this clever film from Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon is all about deconstructing the genre by upgrading the standard serial killer to something a little more . . . epic.
Compulsion
When an erotic novelist’s ex-boyfriend invites her to an Italian villa, she finds him there with another woman and quickly starts falling for her. This flick centers around love, lies, and ultrasteamy encounters.
The Domestics
The apocalypse is majorly cramping one couple’s style in The Domestics. The movie follows the couple as they travel the country trying to avoid sadistic gangs and survive in a lawless world.
Sleeping With the Enemy
In this thriller, Julia Roberts plays a woman who fakes her death, escapes from her violent husband, and adopts a new identity – which, if that isn’t dramatic enough, then leads to a tumultuous love affair with a local teacher played by Kevin Anderson.
Under the Skin
Loosely based on Michel Faber’s novel of the same name, Scarlett Johansson stars in this movie about a predatory alien disguised as a beautiful woman who tries to lure unsuspecting Scottish men into her van. It’s erotic, it’s terrifying, and above all, it’s probably unlike anything you’ve ever seen before.
The Prodigy
In the proud tradition of terrifying-child films like The Bad Seed, Children of the Corn, The Exorcist, and The Omen, meet The Prodigy, about a young boy whose mother grows concerned about his disturbing behavior and wonders if there is something supernatural (and possibly evil) afoot.
The Sixth Sense
This movie has the surprise ending to end all surprise endings. Starring Bruce Willis as the frumpy psychiatrist hired to help a little boy with his special “problem,” this movie made us so very, very afraid of the dark. Haley Joel Osment plays the little boy, Cole, and his scene with a puking Mischa Barton still haunts me to this day. Stick around to the very end to see what’s REALLY going on. (IF you’ve managed to stay away from spoilers all these years.)
Carrie
Carrie has plenty of unsettling scenes in that attic bedroom, but it has an element of old-school camp that makes it less traumatizing for a modern viewer. Plus, the crux of the movie famously takes place at a high school prom!
Before I Go to Sleep
A woman with no memory of her life from her early 20s onward tries to make sense of her present-day surroundings. It’s basically the horror version of 50 First Dates.
The Amityville Horror (2005)
Remakes rarely live up to the original, but the 2005 version of The Amityville Horror has a secret weapon: Ryan Reynolds. Before he suited up as Deadpool, he gave a convincingly dark turn as the demon-addled George Lutz.
The Colony
Climate change is its own monster in The Colony starring Laurence Fishburne and Bill Paxton. Humanity is living in bunkers in this postapocalyptic world, but after answering a distress call, Fishburne’s Briggs realizes they may not be alone.
The Clovehitch Killer
What if your father wasn’t who you thought he was? That question drives this dark thriller about a teen who discovers his dad is keeping a terrible secret.
Child's Play
Chucky keeps returning in sequels, and most recently in a 2019 remake, but none of those movies has captured the pure terror of the original Child’s Play. The serial-killer-possessed doll is a murderous monster with very little camp in his cinematic debut, which only makes his actions all the more startling.
The Alchemist Cookbook
A young man is enjoying the hermit life when he unleashes an ancient demon in his secluded abode. Thanks to the isolation aspect, this movie offers up some next-level scares.
The Canal
Like all horror movie families, the couple in The Canal ignore all of the warning signs that their reasonably priced period house is haunted and move in anyway. Soon the house begins to drive the husband mad – you know, the scary-movie version of the tale as old as time.
Body at Brighton Rock
The scariest horror movies are often rooted in reality. That’s certainly true for Body at Brighton Rock, which follows a camp employee named Wendy who stumbles across a potential murder scene and is then left there to stand guard until officials arrive.
Children of the Corn
Children of the Corn remains one of the most unsettling adaptations of Stephen King’s work. A couple from the city find themselves trapped in a rural town with no adults in this nightmarish story that will change how you look at cornfields forever.
The Appearance
A haunted monastery proves to be the ultimate temptation for a monk sent to investigate the ongoing weirdness happening there in The Appearance. Thanks to its medieval setting, this low-budget horror movie packs in some serious old-school scares.
Slumber
Slumber dares to ask the question: what if Freddy Krueger was a demonic parasite? The answer leaves Maggie Q’s character facing her nightmares to protect her family.
We Are What We Are
A reclusive family of cannibals must rely on their youngest members to find their next meal in this unsettling movie. This one’s definitely not for anyone who is easily freaked out.
Recovery
This modern slasher film relies on a find-my-phone app to drive its plot. A young woman gets an alert from the app to find her missing phone . . . unfortunately, it’s leading her to the home of a crazed family who want to make her part of their brood.
Tragedy Girls
File this one in the category of hidden gems. Tragedy Girls tells the story of aspiring journalists and best friends Sadie and McKayla who catch a serial killer but decide to start killing themselves to grow their social media presence.
What Lies Beneath
The ghost of infidelity comes back to haunt a doctor one year after he cheats on his wife. Now his wife is hearing voices and seeing the ghostly figure of a young woman in this taut thriller.
Welcome to Mercy
A young woman fights the demons within to stop herself from becoming the Antichrist in Welcome to Mercy. Her journey leads her to a convent that may be more intent on harming her than helping.
The Row
Follow up your viewing of The Pledge with The Row for a Greek nightmare double feature. This movie’s concept is almost exactly the same, but this time it’s a sorority subjecting its members to a violent hazing ritual – oh, and there’s also a serial killer on the loose.
The Remains
The antiques in a Victorian house cause major trouble for the new homeowners in The Remains. The antiques possess the family members one by one and slowly grow in power in the process.
The School
A doctor’s search for her missing child leads her to a strange abandoned school full of secrets. Now she’s going to have to face down demonic forces if she has any hope of finding her son.
Scenic Route
Two life-long friends reach their breaking point when they become stranded in the desert. With nowhere to hide from the tension brewing between them, things turn deadly fast.
The Resident
Before he played Negan on The Walking Dead, Jeffrey Dean Morgan got to flex his bad-guy muscles as a deranged stalker in The Resident. Hilary Swank plays the woman his character is obsessed with, and she more than proves she’s up to the task of taking down any and all crazy stalkers her new luxury New York apartment throws at her.
