We’re heading back to school, because Heartbreak High has been renewed for a second season.
It was a no-brainer on Netflix’s part, as the reboot of the classic Aussie teen show amassed more than 42.6 million hours viewed in its first three weeks, placing it firmly on the streamer’s top 10 list.
It’s safe to say the teen drama made an impact all over the globe — a big feat for any TV show, let alone an Australian one.
Heartbreak High has been praised not only for its subject matter, where it unapologetically delves into the nitty gritty but also for its diversity of onscreen representation in regards to race, different sexualities and gender identities, neurodiversity and more.
It’s not easy to live up to the original, which aired in the ‘90s and was hugely successful, making the news of its renewal even more impressive.
Since the show premiered on September 14, the hashtag #heartbreakhigh on TikTok has garnered over 300 million views, and the cast, who were all newcomers, have gained thousands of new followers in the process.
Ayesha Madon, Chloe Hayden and Josh Heuston even attended Melbourne Fashion Week, firmly cementing their status as stars.
“S2 holy cow,” Madon wrote on an Instagram Story. “I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again THANK YOU for watching our show and THANK YOU for supporting Aussie content.”
“We’re going back to school for term 2 ?,” Hayden posted on Instagram, adding “(I am so excited I can not stop crying thank you thank you thank you for loving our show)”.
Filming of season two will take place in Sydney, specifically in Gadigal, Dharug, Dharawal and Ku-ring-gai lands.
A date has currently not been set yet, but in the meantime, you can watch season one of Heartbreak High on Netflix.
