Grown-ish: A Complete Rundown of Zoey and Aaron's Roller-Coaster Relationship
Zoey Johnson (Yara Shahidi) and Aaron Jackson (Trevor Jackson) have taken us on a roller-coaster ride of emotions with their will-they-or-won’t-they relationship throughout the past three seasons of Grown-ish, but will season four finally be the season they get together for good? It’s too soon to tell, but based on the trailer, it looks like someone is getting married, and we’re holding out hope that that couple is Zoey and Aaron. After all that they’ve been through together, we just want to see them happy, and perhaps a marriage might just be what it takes. As we wait to see what #Zaaron have in store for us when Grown-ish premieres on July 8, let’s take a look back at Zoey and Aaron’s complicated relationship timeline.
Season 1
Zoey Johnson has been obsessing crushing on Aaron Jackson ever since she first met him during her freshman year at Cal U. He was a sophomore at the time, and she low-key stalked him in the beginning, popping up everywhere he was at. Zoey’s efforts did eventually pay off, though, as the two started casually hooking up, but nothing serious ever came out of the relationship, even though she clearly wanted more.
Shortly after, Zoey moved on with basketball star Cash Mooney, but after Cash decided to go pro and leave her behind, the two broke up. She then started developing feelings for Luca Hall. It was also around that same time that Aaron finally came to his senses and confessed his true feelings to Zoey, telling her that he liked her. However, Zoey ultimately chose to be with Luca instead of Aaron.
Season 2
The two remained friends during Zoey’s sophomore year. Zoey was still with Luca, while Aaron began hanging out with Ana Torres; however, it was pretty clear that Zoey and Aaron still had feelings for each other deep inside. Even Ana pointed it out when she attempted to put a label on their relationship and Aaron didn’t want to.
Zoey and Luca ended up calling it quits by the end of the season, and that’s when things took a turn for Zoey and Aaron. Before heading off to London for a styling job, Zoey kisses Aaron as he’s dropping her off at the airport, and that’s how the season ends.
Season 3
When Zoey and Aaron reunite in the third season, they act as if nothing happened and go back to being friends. However, their friendship hits a rough patch after Zoey fails to help him out with a job. After some time apart, though, Zoey apologises to Aaron and he eventually forgives her. In the same conversation, Zoey also tells Aaron that she’s decided to quit Cal U and work full-time at her styling job, and he ends up kissing her.
After a month away, Zoey returns to town and is excited to reunite with Aaron, however, he’s since started dating Rochelle. He apologizes to Zoey for not telling her sooner and says he was just scared of getting played by her again. Aaron and Zoey then go back to being friends, but their friendship is short-lived after Rochelle tells Zoey to back off Aaron. However, the two just can’t stay away from each other and end up sleeping together.
Despite cheating on her, Aaron doesn’t break up with Rochelle right away. It’s only after a conversation with Zoey and some hard thinking that he does so. The season ends with Aaron showing up at Zoey’s door and once again confessing his love for her. “The truth is I love you too . . . so much,” he tells her. “I want our story to start now, like right now.”
So, does this mean Zoey and Aaron are finally together? Guess we’ll just have to wait to see.
