It’s a sad day for “Atlanta” fans. FX has confirmed that its critically acclaimed drama will come to an end after season four, which is set to premiere this fall. The news arrives just a month ahead of the show’s long-awaited return for season three – with new episodes airing on TV then streaming on Hulu the following day. “The fourth and final season is slated to debut in the same manner this fall,” FX boss John Landgraf announced at FX’s TCA day on Feb. 17. “The new season is everything you’ve come to expect from ‘Atlanta,’ which is to say, expect the unexpected. Sit back and enjoy the trip.”
Prior to the cancellation news, reports had already shared that the show filmed seasons three and four back-to-back during its long hiatus off the air. Fans of “Atlanta” have been clamoring for the show’s grand homecoming since season two premiered in 2018. The show has received 22 Emmy nominations and five wins – including for outstanding directing for a comedy series and outstanding lead actor in a comedy series in 2017.
The show’s third season will be a huge departure from what we have already seen from Earn (Donald Glover), Paper Boi (Brian Tyree Henry), Darius (LaKeith Stanfield), and Van (Zazie Beetz). Now, the gang are headed overseas for a European tour, where they’ll struggle to adjust to their foreign surroundings and newfound success. So far, FX has only released teaser trailers and no official photos, so it seems there will certainly be some unexpected surprises waiting for viewers in season three. “Atlanta” returns on March 24.
