Is “Frozen 3” Happening? What Kristen Bell and the Rest of the Cast Have to Say
It’s been nearly four years since we last saw Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, Olaf, and Sven in “Frozen 2” – aka the highest-grossing animated movie ever. Now, once again, rumours are swirling about the possibility of a third trip to Arendelle! Although the door seemed mostly closed after the second movie came out back in 2019, we all know that “love is an open door,” and there’s definitely enough “Frozen” love to maybe keep the door open for another sequel in the future!
So what do we actually know about the future of the “Frozen” franchise, and what’s just speculation? A couple of the movie’s stars have teased the possibility of a third movie, but it’s still just a glimmer of potential right now. We’ve rounded up what we do know so far. Keep checking back for more updates as we find out more!
Will There Be a "Frozen 3"?
As of now, there is no official word from Disney on whether or not a third “Frozen” movie is in the works. However, Kristen Bell, who voices Anna, teased the possibility while appearing on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” on June 21.
“I would like to officially announce, with zero authority, ‘Frozen 3,'” she said to cheers from the audience. “Please bear in mind I did say ‘zero authority,’ ’cause I can’t [actually announce it]. I can’t do that – I’m not in charge… But I know Idina [Menzel] recently said she would do it and I feel like if we’re all in, what are we waiting for?”
Menzel did, in fact, recently joke about returning as the voice of Elsa. “I hope it is [happening], but I don’t know,” she said during a June 16 Today Show interview. “Anytime I can be 80 and play a blonde, animated girl who is, like, 15 – who has amazing arms, by the way, I love that about her.”
What Will "Frozen 3" Be About?
Since the movie isn’t even greenlit yet, we obviously don’t have a ton of details about what could happen in a potential third movie.
“I mean, nothing ever closes the door,” co-director and writer Chris Buck told Insider when “Frozen 2” came out in 2019. “As we say in our lives, ‘never say never.’ But for us, that’s what got us figuring out what the story [of ‘Frozen 2’] would be a few years ago. What if we could tell one complete story? A lot of things in ‘Frozen 2’ answer some of the questions in ‘Frozen,’ or questions you didn’t know about.”
The end of “Frozen 2” saw some major changes in Arendelle, with Elsa becoming the “fifth spirit” tying together the magical and human worlds. As she spends more time with the Northuldra people, Anna takes over as Queen of Arendelle, with Kristoff (and Olaf and Sven!) by her side. A potential third movie could explore any (or all) of this, from the new challenges facing Anna as Queen to more magical mayhem that sends Elsa back to Arendelle for aid.
Who Will Be in the "Frozen 3" Cast?
As mentioned above, both Bell and Menzel have recently said that they’d be excited to reprise their roles as Anna and Elsa in a third “Frozen” movie. Meanwhile, co-star Jonathan Groff (Kristoff) has been a little more noncommittal, but still enthusiastic. On an appearance on “The Tonight Show,” he raved about both of his star-making recent projects.
“I feel like, even though those projects seem very different, ‘Frozen’ and ‘Mindhunter,’ I feel like a third ‘Frozen’ and a third season of ‘Mindhunter’ are equally possible,” he teased, as reported by CinemaBlend.
When Will "Frozen 3" Be Released?
If “Frozen 3” does happen, it will still be a few years away. There were six years between the release dates of the first two movies (2013 to 2019), and “Frozen 2” took four years to release after it was greenlit in 2015. If a similar time frame happens between the second and third movies, that would give “Frozen 3” a release year around 2025 or 2026.
