Doctor Emmett Brown and Marty McFly reunited for one more whirlwind adventure at New York Comic Con on Oct. 8. As part of a “Back to the Future” reunion panel at the convention, Christopher Lloyd and Michael J. Fox sat down to reminisce about their days in the DeLorean. Before the actors could even take their seats, they were met with thunderous applause from the audience, who were delighted to see the iconic sci-fi heroes reconvene 37 years after the original 1985 “Back to the Future” film.
During the panel, Lloyd and Fox happily joked about their days filming with each other and their instant chemistry behind the scenes. When asked about the first time they met, Lloyd explained that it was the first day of shooting. Fox added, “It was the first day of shooting. You were literally outside of the DeLorean. [The director] said, ‘Here’s Chris. [Here’s] Mike. Go.'” Lloyd added, “There was immediate chemistry, as they say.”
At one point, Fox – who replaced actor Eric Stoltz as Marty after filming had begun – explained that he’d been having trouble booking roles in his early acting days. One director even told him they couldn’t see his face on a lunch box, adding insult to rejection. After the massive success of “Back to the Future,” Fox made sure to send that same director a lunch box featuring his face from the film. Fox also went on to joke with Lloyd about their time on set and emphasize the importance of actively practicing gratitude.
Following the success of the first “Back to the Future” movie, Lloyd and Fox costarred in two sequel films, “Back to the Future Part II” (1989) and “Back to the Future Part III” (1990). The series also inspired Back to the Future: The Ride at Universal Studios in Orlando, video games, board games, comic books, and a short film titled “Doc Brown Saves the World” starring Lloyd in 2015.
Since their time-traveling days, the actors have maintained a strong friendship. In 2018, Lloyd showed up to support Fox, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease at 29 in 1991, at the A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Cure Parkinson’s charity fundraiser in NYC. During the event, Fox and Lloyd shared a sweet embrace on the red carpet, proving that – DeLorean or not – their friendship has always stood the test of time.
