Drew Barrymore hasn’t played Dylan Sanders in “Charlie’s Angels” since the 2003 sequel, but she’s ready to reprise the role at any moment’s notice. On a Sept. 30 episode of the podcast “Drew’s News,” Benito Skinner asked the actor how she feels about potentially returning to the franchise.
“I just was watching Lucy, funny enough, who I was texting with this morning,” she said, referencing her costar Lucy Liu. “And she was at Comic-Con . . . and they asked her, ‘Would you do a Charlie’s [Angels] 3?’ And I was on the edge of my seat. I would be surprised if any one of us ever decreed that we wouldn’t [do a third movie]. I would. I would in a heartbeat. The answer is an emphatic yes. I will always say yes.”
Back at Comic-Con in July, Liu was asked if she’d ever work with Cameron Diaz and Barrymore on a Charlie’s Angels movie again, and her answer was a bit less definitive. “I think we teamed up as moms,” she said, per People. “It’s really nice that we’re all moms now since that time, and it’s just a different phase in our lives.”
Diaz, Barrymore, and Liu have maintained a close friendship over the years. The trio reunited at Liu’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony in 2019, where she was honoured with her own star – and thanked her costars for their many years of support and friendship. “My dear Angels, it’s a 20-year reunion,” she said. “Twenty years ago we were an elite crime-fighting team, and now look at us.”
Diaz and Liu were also the first-ever guests on “The Drew Barrymore Show” in 2020. “The thing that I love about our friendship is that we have been there in all the big and important moments, we’ve also been there in the small moments and the casual moments, and the reason we are such good friends is that it’s real and we go through real stuff with each other. It’s not a Hollywood fairy tale,” Barrymore said at the time.
In 2021, Barrymore also spoke out in support of Liu after the latter criticized original “Charlie’s Angels” actor Bill Murray for his on-set behaviour, which Liu alleged included “unacceptable and inexcusable” insults. “What you have to know is how much Lucy stood up for herself and that was the great thing that came out of an unfortunate circumstance. She literally said, ‘I do not accept that kind of behaviour from you.’ And we all supported her and backed her up and we moved forward,” Barrymore said on “The Drew Barrymore Show” at the time, per The Independent. “I respected her then, I respect her now. I’m proud of us as a team and a company that we didn’t tiptoe on the eggshells. We dealt with it right then and there, we were strong, and we moved forward and we didn’t accept anything less moving forward.”
