Britney Spears and Sam Asghari are going their separate ways after one year of marriage. The two met in 2016 on the set of the pop star’s music video for “Slumber Party.” Just two months before Spears’s 13-year conservatorship was terminated in November 2021, the longtime couple announced their engagement on Instagram. “I can’t f*cking believe it ??????❣️!!!!!!,” the singer captioned a video featuring her custom diamond engagement ring.
On April 11, 2022, Spears and Asghari announced that they were expecting their first child together. The latter spoke about the pregnancy on Instagram, writing, “Fatherhood is something i have always looked forward to and i don’t take lightly. It is the most important job i will ever do.” A month after their announcement, the couple shared that they experienced a pregnancy loss. They later revealed that they were “moving forward” with their future and still planned to expand their family.
On June 9, 2022, after five years of dating and less than one year of being engaged, Spears and Asghari tied the knot in an intimate wedding ceremony in Los Angeles. A source told People that the singer cried several times on her big day – all “happy tears.”
However, on Aug. 16, 2023, Asghari filed for divorce from Spears, citing irreconcilable differences. In court documents obtained by POPSUGAR, Asghari noted their date of separation as July 28, 2023. Reps for Spears and Asghari did not respond to POPSUGAR’s requests for comments.

April 2018: Britney Spears and Sam Asghari Attend the GLAAD Media Awards Together
Spears and Asghari made their first public appearance together at the GLAAD Media Awards in April 2018. At the event, Spears received the Vanguard Award, which is awarded to a celebrity who does not identify as LGBTQ+ but has significantly promoted equal rights for the community. Asghari took to Instagram to congratulate Spears on her award, saying, “So proud of my better half @britneyspears to have such huge impact in promoting equality and acceptance of LGBTQ. The world is a better place because you are here.”

Spears and Asghari made their red carpet debut in July 2019 at the premiere of Quentin Tarantino‘s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” The film, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Margot Robbie, received critical acclaim and earned several accolades from both the Academy Awards and the Golden Globes.

November 2021: Britney Spears's Conservatorship Is Terminated
Shortly after Spears’s engagement was announced, news broke that the singer’s 13-year conservatorship was officially brought to an end. Spears shared her feelings on Instagram, writing, “I’m celebrating my freedom and my B day for the next two months !!!!!!!!!!! I mean after 13 years … I think I’ve waited long ENOUGH !!!!” Asghari also showed his support on the platform, writing, “History was made today. Britney is Free!”

June 2022: Britney Spears and Sam Asghari Get Married
On June 9, the couple tied the knot in a small wedding ceremony in Los Angeles. Celebrities such as Madonna, Paris Hilton, Selena Gomez, and Drew Barrymore attended the event; none of Spears’s family members were present. Prior to the ceremony, her ex Kevin Federline‘s attorney, Mark Vincent Kaplan, told People that the singer’s two sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James, wouldn’t be at the wedding because they “didn’t want to take away from” the couple’s special moment. However, he said that “they’re happy for their mom and they are hopeful that Sam and Britney are starting a great future together.”

August 2023: Sam Asghari Files For Divorce From Britney Spears
A year after tying the knot, Asghari filed for divorce from Spears on Aug. 16. In the court documents obtained by POPSUGAR, Asghari cited July 28, 2023 as their separation date and “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for their split. He is seeking spousal support.
