Jurnee Smollett Will Be Back to Kick Ass as Black Canary in HBO Max Spinoff Film

With Blue Beetle, Batgirl, and now the Black Canary spinoff, HBO Max is shaping up to be THE place for superhero films. On Aug. 20, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that a Black Canary-centered spinoff was in early development at the streaming service. “We’re just at the very beginning of a loooong journey to the screen,” the film’s screenwriter, Misha Green, wrote on Twitter about the project. “But obvs I couldn’t turn down the chance to put the DAMN in The Black Damn Canary with @jurneesmollett.” Ahead, you can learn everything we currently know about the movie, including its cast, its creative team, and its potential release date.

Lovecraft Country creator Misha Green will serve as screenwriter for the film with Birds of Prey‘s Sue Kroll producing. It is unknown if Green will also direct.

HBO Max's Black Canary Spinoff Cast

Jurnee Smollett is set to reprise the role of Dinah Lance/Black Canary, which she played in 2020’s Birds of Prey. On Aug. 20, she confirmed the news of her casting in a post on Instagram, saying, “Guess the Canary is out of the cage! ? So excited to finally embark on this adventure with my creative soul sis @mishatrillxxl.” As of now, the rest of the cast has yet to be announced.

HBO Max's Black Canary Spinoff Plot

Plot details are currently scarce, but what we do know is that it will focus on the version of Dinah Lance/Black Canary seen in 2020’s Birds of Prey, whose mother also possessed the metahuman ability of supersonic screaming. However, if star Smollett has her way, Lady Shiva will likely make an appearance.

With Green writing and producing action-thriller The Mother and directing Tomb Raider 2, it’s unclear when production on the film will begin. Add in the fact that Smollett still has Netflix films Escape From Spiderhead and Lou to shoot, and it’s unlikely we’ll get the project before late 2022/early 2023.
