From Evangelion to Pokémon: 5 of the Best Anime Streaming in Australia

In some circles, anime has a reputation as being too childish or boyish — but the truth is that there’s anime for everyone, whether you want something with action, romance, fantasy or anything in between. To help you get started, we’ve picked out our favourites animes on Prime Video.

Rebuild of Evangelion

Rebuild of Evangelion is a four-movie series that retells the original Neon Genesis Evangelion series, an epic saga about the highly-skilled pilots who control powerful bio-mechanic mechs to defend Earth against monstrous beings known as Angels. The series explores the physical and psychological repercussions of these confrontations, and combines elements from Shinto cosmology with Jewish and Christian traditions.

The movies add new add new characters, scenes and a completely new ending. Intended to be more accessible to new fans, Rebuild of Evangelion is a great place to start.

Pokémon the Series

With the 25th season airing in 2022, it can be overwhelming to even think about watching Pokémon the Series. But here’s the truth: you can jump in at any season. The anime follows the perpetually-10 year old Ash Ketchum and Pikachu as they travel the world battling and collecting Pokémon to become “the very best”.

Black and White, season 14, is a great spot to jump in. Ash and Pikachu are joined by new trainers Iris and Cilan, and pestered by Team Rocket. The 20th season, Sun and Moon, is also good for newcomers, and is followed by Sun and Moon — Ultra Adventures and Sun and Moon — Ultra Legends. In Sun and Moon, Ash and Pikachu go to Pokémon school in Alola, participate in the island trials and learn to harness the power of Z-moves.

Babylon

This one’s for the thriller girlies! Zen Seizaki is a public prosecutor investigating a pharmaceutical company that faked clinical research on its new drug. Together with his assistant officer Atsuhiko Fumio, Zen uncovers a twisted web of corruption that’s beyond his wildest dreams. Babylon is a 12-episode series, so it’s perfect for a weekend binge.

Sonic X

Our favourite hedgehog speedster finds himself warped into the human world with his nemesis, Dr Eggman. With some help from a boy named Chris, Sonic must save his friends from the mad scientist and retrieve all of the Chaos Emeralds in order to set things right in both worlds. All three seasons of Sonic X are streaming now on Prime Video.

Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku

Here it is, a rom-com anime! When Narumi starts a new job, she’s reunited with her childhood friend Hirotaka, who she’s surprised to see has gotten hot in the years since they’ve seen each other. The only thing standing in the way of their passionate romance is the secret that they’re both “otaku” — nerds. Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku chronicles Narumi and Hirotaka’s ups and downs as they try to overcome their awkwardness and commit to a serious, and seriously romantic, relationship.
