Do opposites really attract? It’s an age-old question, and one that the 2021 reboot of Beauty and the Geek is hoping to answer.
Hosted by certified beauty — and self-confessed dork — Sophie Monk, this dating show-slash-social experiment will pair 10 beauties with 10 geeks to see if any sparks fly.
Speaking to POPSUGAR Australia, Monk told us to expect “goosebumps, tears and comedy saying, “You’re definitely going to laugh. It’s just so hilarious watching opposites coming into each other’s worlds.
“You won’t laugh at them, but you will laugh because it’s just so funny. And then the next minute you’re just in tears! It’s such a gorgeous show, so innocent and beautiful.”
So here’s how it works: the beauties and geeks are given a series of real-life challenges, and as they work through them and get to know one another, we get to see whether there’s a connection that overcome their differences.
If a couple wins one of the challenges, they then get to go on a one-on-one date to see if there’s a romantic spark that could blossom into something more. On the other hand, the two couples who land in the bottom will have to compete in a head-to-head challenge, and the couple that loses that will be sent packing. Then, the final couple left standing at the end of the series will take home the $100,000 prize!
So, let’s get to know our Geeks.
Alexander, 26/VIC
A fun fact: Alex describes himself as “a bit of a Nutty Professor-type” with his Bachelor of Science and Diploma of Mathematics and Statistics, but he’s not just about studying! Alex also has a passion for juggling, video games, fine dining and classical music.
Frank, 28/NSW
A fun fact: Frank is an ER doctor who’s also a sports nut. Frank’s obsessed with anything from the footy to wrestling and finds comfort in knowing everything there is to know — from history to statistics — about any given sport.
George, 27/VIC
A fun fact: George is an escape room master who plays Dungeons and Dragons professionally. He’s been playing one singular game of D&D with his mates for the past five years, and says that he loves “the creativity and entertainment side of it”.
“The way it tells a story and challenges you creatively to solve complex problems in unique and engaging ways is unparalleled,” he adds.
Jackson, 19/SA
A fun fact: Like Alex Mack before him, Jackson has an extensive hat collection that he adores. His favourite reads ‘I am Jackson Palmer’, which is not only a fact, but a “time saver” when he meets new people.
James, 25/SA
A fun fact: James is a pretty shy and reserved kind of guy, but that doesn’t mean he’s not up for adventure. In fact, he once booked a two-week trip to Perth on a whim and ended up living in a remote town in the Kimberley for a year.
Kiran, 30/VIC
A fun fact: Kiran is a good communicator, he’s charming, he’s well travelled, and he’s a law graduate, but he’s never been in a relationship.
“If my dating history were sold in a bookstore, it would be a postcard or a pamphlet,” he says.
Kyle, 22/SA
A fun fact: Kyle’s really into military history, so much so that he’s a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism, which is a group that re-enacts historic battles, armour and all!
Lachlan, 32/NSW
A fun fact: Although small groups and one-on-one conversations tend to make Lachlan nervous, if you ask him about motorsports he’ll be instantly at ease. He can name every Bathurst 1000 winner from 1963 to today!
Mitchell, 28/VIC
A fun fact: Mitchell dreams of becoming a screenwriter or video editor, and has tons of ideas for sci-fi and thriller films. If he were part of the winning couple, he’d use “at least $9,500” to upgrade his computer in order to help achieve those dreams.
Sam, 23/VIC
A fun fact: Sam once went to the same nightclub for 30 weeks in a row, a feat which earned him a medal and free entry for the rest of his life.
Beauty and the Geek premieres Sunday, July 11, at 7.00pm on Channel 9.
