Every Easter Egg We Spotted In the New ‘Barbie’ Trailer
A new trailer for Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” movie dropped and fans are not okay. It’s 1 minute and 42 seconds of pure Barbie bliss — and it’s absolutely packed with Easter eggs.
There are, conservatively, 87 Barbies in this trailer, six Kens, a recreation of the iconic “Hi Barbie,” “Hi Ken!” lyrics, and a very faithful adaptation of the unrealistic standards society puts on women via Barbie’s preternaturally-arched feet.
Because we’re just as excited as you for “Barbie” to arrive in cinemas on July 20, we’ve gone through the trailer frame by frame to pick out every Barbie Easter egg. We’re doing it in the hopes that it will also help you stay entertained while we wait for the cinematic release. And if not, we hope it helps you catch something you missed the first time around. Let’s go, Barbie!
Who Plays Barbie?
Margot Robbie is the titular “Barbie”, but she’s joined by a whole cast of other versions of the doll. Issa Rae is President Barbie, Emma Mackey is Physicist Barbie, Nicola Coughlan is Diplomat Barbie, Alexandra Shipp is Author Barbie, Ritu Arya is Pulitzer Prize-winning Barbie, Hari Nef is Doctor Barbie, Dua Lipa is Mermaid Barbie, Sharon Rooney is Lawyer Barbie, and Ana Cruz Kayne is Supreme Court Justice Barbie.
Kate McKinnon is a poor Barbie who’s been victim to a pair of scissors and a permanent marker, an as-yet-unnamed Barbie has a prosthetic arm, and another Barbie is in a wheelchair. We love to see Barbie representation!
Who Plays Ken?
Joining Ryan Gosling’s Ken is Simu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa, Kingsley Ben-Adir and Scott Evans. We briefly see Michael Cera as a Ken-lookalike, but a quick internet sleuth reveals he’s actually playing Allan, Ken’s best friend.
Barbie Land Is In the Shape of a Heart
The place where Barbie and Ken (all of them) live is called Barbie Land, and everything inside is saccharine pink. Comparatively, the Real World is drab and grey.
Other highlights from Barbie World: the airport is called BAX (for Barbie International Airport), the hair salon is called Perfect Hair, there’s a generic Candy Store, and the Statue of Liberty has been replaced by a giant, pink Barbie statue.
Barbie’s Feet Stay the Same When She Takes Her Heels Off
We see Barbie slip out of a pair of pink, fluffy heels and her feet stay the same shape as if she’s still wearing heels.
The Lyrics to Aqua’s ‘Barbie Girl’ Have a Cameo
Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling recreate the “Hi Barbie,” “Hi Ken!” line from the 1997 banger. They even put on the same voices as the singers.
The Barbie Land Cinema Is Showing “The Wizard of Oz”
Barbie TikTok sleuth hopesloopentertainment thinks Dorothy’s journey in “The Wizard of Oz” might be a foil to Barbie’s own storyline.
“We get the feeling that Barbie is searching for a sense of something else, much like Dorothy. But instead of leaving and finding something exceptional and bright coloured like Dorothy does, I think Barbie’s gonna go out into the real world and find that things are not the same.”
Ryan Gosling Says “Boyfriend Girlfriend”
There’s a hilarious interaction between Margot Robbie Barbie and Ryan Gosling Ken that’s an Easter egg to how kids speak about relationships when they’re at the age of playing with Barbies. Ken says he wants to stay over because they’re “boyfriend girlfriend” and a clueless Barbie asks what they’ll do. Crickets. Then Ken admits, “I’m actually not sure.”
The Kens Are Fighting (and Later Dance Fighting)
It’s an “Avengers: Endgame” level battle between the Kens, with Ryan Gosling and Simu Liu as Iron Man and Thanos.
America Ferrera Plays a Human Who Goes to Barbie Land
We know from the character posters that America Ferrera plays a human; HOWEVER, we also see her jumping out of a van in a pink jumpsuit with Margo Robbie Barbie and Alexandra Shipp Barbie. There’s only one conclusion to draw from this, and it’s inevitable: “Barbie” is a heist movie.
(At least, that’s our theory.)
Watch the trailer here and let us know if we’ve missed any Barbie Easter eggs!
