Every Major Film and TV Show Asa Butterfield Has Starred In

Butterfield had his first major film role in the 2008 drama “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.” Based on the novel of the same name by John Boyne, the film follows two 8-year-old boys living in Nazi Germany during World War II. Bruno (Butterfield) is the son of a Nazi solider, while Shmuel (Jack Scanlon) is a Jewish prisoner. Bruno befriends Shmuel after he stumbles upon a nearby concentration camp. The film has a tragic ending, and Butterfield’s performance is just one of his many brilliant ones.

“Nanny McPhee Returns” is the sequel to the acclaimed 2005 film “Nanny McPhee.” In the film, Nanny McPhee is sent to Green family home after the arrival of their two snobby, rich cousins causes the Green children to fight. Nanny McPhee is not the average nanny, however, and uses magic to teach the children valuable lessons. Butterfield plays Norman Green, the oldest of the Green children who is a strong-willed, opinionated young boy.

“The Wolfman” is a remake of the classic 1941 horror film of the same name. The movie stars Benicio del Toro, Emily Blunt, Anthony Hopkins, and, of course, Asa Butterfield. Set in the late 19th century, Lawrence Talbot is bitten and cursed by a werewolf. He has no control over his terrifying transformation, so he wreaks havoc on the town he lives in. Butterfield plays a small role in the film as Lawrence’s younger brother Ben, who is eventually one of his victims.

Martin Scorsese‘s 2011 film “Hugo” was received with overwhelmingly positive reviews at the time of its release and earned 11 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Cinematography. Based on the 2007 novel “The Invention of Hugo Cabaret” by Brian Selznick, the film centres around the titular young orphan (played by Butterfield), who lives alone in a Paris train station. In this screen adaptation of Orson Scott-Card’s sci-fi novel of the same name, Butterfield plays Ender Wiggin, a highly skilled young boy who is sent to Battle School to prepare for an alien invasion. At Battle School, Ender is taught by military captain Mazer Rackham (Ben Kingsley), the man responsible for stopping the first alien invasion. Following an intense battle with aliens, Ender emerges as a victorious new admiral and seeks to form a new colony in space. In this thrilling sci-fi film, Butterfield stars alongside Ford, Hailee Steinfeld, Viola Davis, and Breslin.

After the tragic death of his best friend, 16-year-old Jude Keffy-Horn (Butterfield) reconciles with his absent father, Les (Ethan Hawke), in 1980s New York City. Jude is an angsty, confused teenager whose life is complicated by the adults around him. Thanks to his love interest Eliza (Hailee Steinfeld), and his straightedge punk half-brother Johnny (Emile Hirsch), Jude learns about himself and finds joy in his dysfunctional yet loving friends and family.

Based on the novel of the same name by Ransom Riggs, Tim Burton’s “Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children” features a star-studded cast that include Eva Green, Allison Janney, Judi Dench, Samuel L. Jackson, and “Yellowjackets‘” Ella Purnell. In the film, Jake Portman (Buttferfield) learns about a mysterious place called Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, which hosts children who have magical powers. To his surprise, Jake discovers a power of his own and learns he can travel through time to help save his newfound friends in the process.

In this sci-fi love story, Butterfield plays Gardner Elliot, a teenager who is the first human to be raised on Mars. When he connects with 16-year-old Tulsa (Britt Robertson) in a chatroom online, he soon develops feelings for her and vows to meet her on Earth. However, he discovers that not only does he have low bone density, but he also has an enlarged heart, making the travel from Mars to Earth extremely risky. Will he be able to stay with Tulsa? Or will he be forced to go back to the only planet he can survive on?

Reminiscent of John Green’s “The Fault in Our Stars,” “Then Came You” is a romantic drama that will force you to open your mind and inspire you to live life unapologetically. Calvin Lewis is a hypochondriac whose beliefs take over his life. Following the recommendation of a doctor, Calvin joins a support group where he meets Skye (Maisie Williams), a teenager with terminal cancer. The two form a friendship, and Calvin helps Skye complete everything she wants to do on her bucket list. Along the way, he develops feelings for Skye and overcomes the fears that paralyzed him for much of his life.

When physics student Stillman (Butterfield) is broken up with by his girlfriend Debbie (Sophie Turner), he is crushed. Through his heartbreak, Stillman is inspired to win Debbie back and uses his brains to create a time machine. Stillman seeks to change the course of his relationship with Debbie with the time machine, and prevent her from breaking up with him. Can Stillman allow nature to dictate the course of their relationship, or will he continue to manipulate time to save it?

Butterfield currently stars in Netflix’s acclaimed comedy series “Sex Education” as lead character Otis Milburn. The show dives into the lives of the students and teachers at Moordale Secondary School as they deal with sexual experiences. Otis, the son of sex therapist Jean Milburn (Gillian Anderson), is uncomfortable exploring his sexuality. However, with his wealth of knowledge thanks to his upbringing, he forms a sex-therapy group at Moordale to help himself and fellow students navigate their feelings and sexual desires.

In “Choose or Die,” Kayla (Iola Evans) comes from a difficult upbringing and works as a cleaner to put herself through college. In an attempt to give herself some financial stability, she seeks to win unclaimed prize money in a vintage horror game with her nerdy friend Isaac (Butterfield). Everything is going well — until they experience real-life horror in the process.

James (Butterfield) and Hayley (Cora Kirk) are lamenting the fact they’re going to spend their first Christmas as a couple apart, and both decide to surprise the other at their family celebration. Hilarity and awkwardness ensue as they both spend the holiday apart and without their family, and their relationship is put to the test as family truths come to light.
