Get ready for the rollercoaster ride of the year because “MAFS” Season 11 is about to kick off! This time, we’re in for a treat with a diverse cast, including our oldest-ever participant and a same-sex couple. But hold on tight, because this season is not just your typical love story. But, before we dive into the drama and get to know the new cast, let’s address the age-old question: Are these “MAFS” marriages legally binding?
Before the new season even kicks off, we’re being told to brace ourselves for rivalries, betrayals, and heartbreak that will not only test the couples but also shake the very foundations of the experiment. This season promises to challenge everything you thought you knew about “MAFS”. The participants are in for a wild ride, facing tests and revelations that will push them to the limit.
So, without further ado, let’s find out if these marriages are legit.
Are the “MAFS” Marriages Real?
While the weddings on the show appear legit and follow the customs of a proper nuptial, whether they’re legally binding is slightly questionable. To save you some time, the short answer is: No, the weddings on “MAFS” are not real, instead, they’re a commitment ceremony where two people promise one another to give the social experiment their all.
The contestants and their stories are genuine, but the marriages are not recognised by the Australian Marriage Act, which, if you’ve watched the show, you’ll know that it’s probably a good thing considering the relationships on the show very rarely work out.
A spokesperson from Nine has also previously confirmed the above, saying: “Each participant embarked on a commitment ceremony with a wedding celebrant with all due intention to commit fully to this union for the duration of the experiment.
“At the end of the experiment, they are given the option to continue with the relationship or go their separate ways.”
While “MAFS” has produced a few successful relationships after the cameras have stopped rolling, the majority are known to end things the minute they’re given the option to.
Whether this season will be able to produce healthy relationships is yet to be seen but for the sake of the couples, we sure hope so.
“Married At First Sight” airs at 7.30pm on Channel 9 and 9Now.
