Why You Shouldn't Get Your Hopes Up For a “The Adam Project” Sequel
Ryan Reynolds’s latest film, “The Adam Project,” hit Netflix on March 11 and has since gained positive reviews from both critics and audiences. The film, directed by Shawn Levy, is not the pair’s first action collaboration together. In 2021, Levy directed the highly acclaimed “Free Guy,” which also starred Reynolds as the lead and was revered by audiences. Due to its growing popularity, many have wondered if there will be a sequel to “The Adam Project,” and here’s what we know so far.
What Is “The Adam Project” About?
If time travel did exist, would you keep it or destroy it? This question is explored in “The Adam Project” by main character Adam Reed. In the year 2050, Adam (Reynolds) is on a rogue rescue mission through time to save his wife, Laura (Zoe Saldana), who was presumed dead after a crash in 2018. Instead of going to 2018, Reed crash lands in 2022, where he meets a younger, 12-year-old version of himself who is grieving the death of his father, Louis (Mark Ruffalo), the mastermind behind time travel. Along with his younger self, Adam seeks to time travel to 2018, when his father created the time travel particle accelerator, and destroy it in order to save the world.
Will There Be a Sequel to “The Adam Project”?
As of right now, there’s been no official word on a “The Adam Project” sequel from Netflix.
Film director Shawn Levy addressed the potential for a second film in an interview with Indie Wire, saying, “There was so much love for it in early cuts at Netflix, and the question of a sequel came up. And Ryan and I talked about it and we both said, ‘You know what? This thing is exactly what we set out to make, and I think we’re just going to leave this here.'”
In addition, Levy also pointed to his own vision of the film, saying, “There was never pressure to leave it more open-ended, but I suppose, gun to my head, I could come up with sequel ideas for ‘The Adam Project’ . . . I’m not currently inclined to pursue those, because this movie resolves itself with exactly the feeling that I wanted, which is that combination of warmth and tears, but also hope. I want to leave that one as is.”
It seems like Levy is pretty adamant about leaving “The Adam Project” as a standalone film. Still, you never know! There is always the potential for a sequel if there is a significant response to and demand for it. Watch “The Adam Project” streaming now on Netflix and make your opinion known, and who knows what could happen?!
