Are You Brave Enough to Try TikTok’s One-Minute Mullet?
2021 has proved to be quite interesting when it comes to hair trends. We’ve seen hair horns make a statement, the return of the beehive and Farrah Fawcett inspired hair and of course, the mullet. Labelled the “soft serve mullet”, this modern take on a classic style has been rocked by everyone from Miley Cyrus to Rihanna and Doja Cat.
And now, thanks to TikTok creators, there is an easy way to achieve this on-trend haircut and you can do it yourself — all you need is a pair of sharp scissors, a hair tie and roughly 60 seconds. To achieve the one-minute mullet, all you have to do is tie your hair in a ponytail at the top of your head, then cut along the bottom of the ponytail in a straight line.
When you release your hair from the hair tie, you should be left with a softly layered mullet. So easy! As per Stylist, one TikTok tutorial that is proving to be extremely popular is from the user @effervescingelephant, whose video currently has over 3.8 million views.

The tutorial is super simple and shows the TikTok creator successfully achieving the one-minute mullet with little effort. It’s actually enough to inspire us to try this out ourselves… Maybe. But, there is a slight caveat that must be stated with this style — it’s not exactly a true mullet.
The resulting hairstyle is more of a layered shag ‘do, which is also proving to be super popular recently. While this style is far less dramatic than a traditional mullet — which has far more severe-looking layers — it’s an easy way to achieve a layered, choppy shag/soft serve mullet look without the need for a hairdresser. If you’re wanting to change up your look, this might be the cheapest and easiest way to do so.
