She initially started off as the brow-queen of Melbourne, before quickly cementing her status in Sydney. No one knows brows better than Suzie Mcintosh. One look at her Instagram — which boasts over 50,000 followers — tells you everything there is to know. Those who walk into her clinic walk out with soft, beautifully shaped brows each and every time.
It’s no wonder she’s always fully booked out. Her existing clients refuse to go to anyone else, and why would they? Mcintosh opened her namesake salon in the upscale suburb of Toorak in Melbourne in mid-2017, after the business outgrew its previous three locations in just three years.
Then, in June 2021, the brow specialist partnered up with Aussie beauty giant, MECCA, and opened her first Sydney salon within the MECCA Sydney flagship store on George St. The young-trailblazer has seen exponential growth year on year. From the international and celebrity clientele to her booked out roster, Mcintosh has made a name for herself as the architect of brows.
Whether you’re looking to ombre or feather your brows, or you’re just in need of a classic wax and tint, the specialists at Suzie Mcintosh will make sure you walk away with beautifully sculpted brows. POPSUGAR Australia caught up with Mcintosh to discuss all things brows and suss what her favourite products are to achieve salon-worthy results at home.
POPSUGAR Australia: Thin brows have been going viral this year! Have you found this trend has actually translated to requests in the studio?
Suzie Mcintosh: Everything circles back however thin brows are definitely something that should stay in the past! Thankfully no, our clients know to avoid the trend. We are busier than ever with brow laminations to make brows appear fuller/ thicker!
PS: Are there any styling tips for those who want to incorporate the trend but don’t want to commit to actually removing brow hair?
SM: Trends come and go, so keeping as much hair as possible and sticking to what’s natural is always best! It’s all about removing the “right” hairs rather than a lot of hairs, to create a brow perfectly tailored to each individual. Removing less hair will also mean your waxes will last you 4-5 weeks rather than 2-3 weeks! If you want to follow the thin-brow makeup trend utilise makeup (concealer) to alter the shape of your natural brows.
PS: Do you get shown pictures of celebrity brows by clients and if so, whose brows are requested most frequently?
SM: We probably see the Kardashians and Zendaya’s brows the most!
PS: Other than the thin brow, what trends have you noticed this year?
SM: Soft arches and feathery textured brows have been so popular lately and are staples in creating a classic and timeless brow. People are moving away from bold/defined and dark brows.
PS: What are some common mistakes you see from clients?
SM: Some of the biggest mistakes we see are brows that are too dark and overfilled with makeup. When using brow products, I always recommend going a shade lighter than your brow hair. Be gentle with the product (don’t apply too much pressure) so that you can build up the colour and keep as close to your natural shape as possible. Only use the product in your gaps.
PS: Why is finding the right brow shape for you important?
SM: Have you ever seen an attractive woman with bad brows? We never redesign a client’s brows, generally. We go with their natural brow shape and bone structure making slight changes, within reason, to create perfectly shaped brows. I personally love a softer arch, not so squared off. Brows add structure to the face and bring the attention to the eyes.
PS: What are some hacks for maintaining your brows between appointments?
SM: Cosmetic tattoo brows will forever be the best investment to achieve a low maintenance routine between your brow appointments. It leaves your brows with a shape that’s so easy to maintain you can simply pluck your stray hairs always to maintain the shape yourself! Almost like a permanent “tint stain” effect.
PS: Do you have any pet peeves when it comes to social media brow trends?
SM: When people shave off their brow tails! Or use “at home lamination kits”… rarely ends well. Another trend I have seen circulating is brow bleaching… not a fan!
PS: What are your favourite brow makeup products?
SM: I really love all of Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz pencils. They have great shades and last a long time. Another affordable option is Mecca Max’s Brow Guru range. I love the MECCA MAX brow products and have been using the products both personally and in the salon for years.
