Melanoma is a nasty form of skin cancer. In fact, it’s the most serious of the three types of skin cancer and is largely caused by UV radiation from the sun, with roughly 90 per cent of cases preventable. Australia has one of the highest rates of melanoma in the world and it’s time to change this statistic.
Some of our favourite content creators and internet personalities are joining forces with Australian SPF brand Naked Sundays to give melanoma the cold shoulder. Today, Sunday, September 26, Naked Sundays is donating 10 per cent of its sales to the Melanoma Insititute Australia, to help fund research into the prevention and cure of this disease.
The likes of Flex Mami and Keira Maguire are adding their voices to the conversation, and helping to raise awareness of both melanoma and Naked Sundays’ wonderful campaign. To do this, these personalities will be posting images of their “cold shoulders” to social media and are encouraging you to do the same.
Naked Sundays co-founder Samantha Brett says the team was inspired by the work undertaken by the Melanoma Institute Australia and its goal of zero deaths from melanoma this decade and wanted to help in some way, hence the idea of the ‘Naked Sunday’.
“Melanoma is so prevalent in Australia, but what gets overlooked is that it’s not actually an older person’s disease,” Brett said in a statement. “It’s millennials and people under 40 who are most at risk. But that risk can also be minimised right now, by simply wearing SPF every day and doing regular checks!
“We came up with ‘Naked Sunday’ to give melanoma the cold shoulder, and to help to spread the word together with our amazing tribe and utilising the power of social media. It’s a combination of education, prevention and a celebration of self-love at the same time.
“We cannot wait to see the sea of ‘cold shoulders’ and naked selfies on social media, spreading self-love, melanoma awareness, putting a smile on people’s faces for their Sundays and raising money to support a goal of zero deaths from the disease this decade.”
If you want to get involved, consider purchasing an SPF product from Naked Sundays today — our editors love the SPF50+ Collagen Glow Creme and the Glow Body Mist SPF50+ — with 10 per cent of the sale being donated and help spread the word on social media by posting your cold shoulder selfie. And finally, please remember to continue to wear sunscreen every single day!
