Megan Fox has been generating a storm of headlines recently, but the detail that caught this beauty obsessive’s eye was the fire look she recently broke the internet with: the flip bun hairstyle, served wet-AF.

Fox waved a fleeting adios to social media after posting her look from Rihanna’s comeback, aka the Super Bowl. In it, she wore a plunging corset and crisp, slicked bun that channelled 90s sci-fi heroine vibes. Hair stylist Dimitris Giannetos crafted the look in an airport bathroom, where the “Jennifer’s Body” actress got ready for the show (and the game).

Dimitris slicked back the majority of her hair, leaving two face-framing dagger-edged tendrils loose. He then tied her hair in a classic ponytail before tucking the bun on a final twist, creating the distinctive bun with a ponytail hanging loose down Fox’s back.

Kim Kardashian debuted the wet flip bun look back in September 2022. Kardashian’s hair stylist Chris Appleton coined the name “flip bun”, and it stuck, although the style remains controversial.

In fact, when Appleton shared a TikTok of Kardashian with the hairstyle last year, it caused chaos. One follower commented, “that hair is what i accidentally do when i’m rushing and making a pony.”

Another added, “But u forgot to do her hair.” Others defended it, one chiming in, “Guys the hair is chic please,” and another writing, “Finally a relatable hair! That’s me in high school after volleyball.”

For the Super Bowl, Fox opted for a more polished version of the wet flip bun hairstyle.

Meanwhile, Fox’s makeup was soft, with a blurred charcoal smoky eye, nude lips and apricot blush — and her classic structured arches. Whatever happens in her personal life, Megan Fox is clearly not letting the whispers around her relationship stop her from serving a slay, next to a urinal or otherwise.

Controversy aside, TikTokers have been recreating the style. It involves sectioning the front and face-framing strands, before slicking their hair back with wax sticks. We recommend pomades that maintain the “wet look” rather than matting hair down, like Disco Stick ($25).

Below, see her look from every angle, with styling tips from Jaye Edwards of Edwards and Co.

Jay Edwards says the wet flip bun is all about an “effortless aesthetic”, and is perfect for both disguising dirty hair and extending the time between washes.

If dry styling, Edwards suggests spraying the hair down with water before blasting dry.

“This smooths out any kinks or waves in the hair, which will help you achieve Megan’s flyaway-free, slick look.”

Edwards also has a hot tip for figuring out your perfect ponytail placement. “Draw a line from the angle of your cheekbones, to the back of your head,” he explains.

What about getting that wet — rather than a greasy or crisp — look?

It’s all in the products. Edwards suggests ColorWow Pop and Lock High Gloss Serum ($42) for Fox’s signature wet look.

“Then finish with a blast of ColorWow Extra Mist-ical Shine Spray, ($61)” he advises, as “this will take your gloss and shine to the next level.”
