Expert-Approved Makeup Essentials to Survive This Season’s Humidity

This season is shaping up to be humid, thanks to the very unwelcome appearance of La Niña. And while the humidity is already wreaking havoc with our hair, the weather also plays a role in your skin and how your makeup fares. There’s nothing worse than putting on a full face of makeup to have it dripping down your face a few hours later.

To help lock down your La Niña-proof makeup routine for this summer is Milk Makeup’s Global Studio Artist, Sara Wren, who has all of the tips and tricks to prevent your foundation from melting in the heat and humidity. Here’s what to do.

Opt For Lightweight Products

“Our skin is constantly changing, along with the weather,” said Wren. “Just like you would update your wardrobe, your beauty routine needs some change too. Heat can cause makeup to melt or transfer in the summer, so it’s important to pick products that are lightweight and not too emollient during the warmer months.

“Gripping and waterproof products are essential for preventing makeup meltdown when it’s a million degrees out. No one wants to worry about their complexion products transferring if they hug a friend or gently wipe their face. A great makeup-gripping primer will help keep your look locked in, no matter how warm it gets.”

Primer Is Non-Negotiable

As Wren mentioned, primer is the best way to keep your makeup looking great and on your face, despite how sweaty you might be. Milk Makeup’s Hydro Grip Primer ($52) is formulated with aloe water, hyaluronic acid, sweet cherry and vitamin B3 and B5 to nourish skin and increase glow.

“I recommend Hydro Grip Primer all year round to my clients, but you will really see the gripping powers throughout summer when you’re spending more time outside and possibly sweating,” said Wren. “The blue agave extract in the formula creates an invisible gripping layer that keeps your makeup locked in for up to 12 hours.”

To really double down on the primer, you might also want to consider incorporating Milk Makeup’s Hydro Grip Eye Primer ($37), which creates a smooth base for eyeshadow and concealer, helping to lock down colour for up to eight hours while preventing against fading, creasing and smudging. The dream!

Don’t Forget Your SPF

Despite the slightly cooler and more overcast summer conditions created by La Niña, it’s still important to slather on sunscreen every single day. The UV levels in Australia will still be high during this season, even if the weather makes it feel less severe.

“Even more important than makeup that doesn’t budge in the summer is making sure you have SPF on!” said Wren. “I love our Sunshine Skin Tint SPF 30 ($64) because it’s a triple threat: face oil, skin tint, and sunscreen all in one. I like to call it ‘model in a bottle’ since it’s a gorgeous tint that gives you a red carpet glow — all while protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful rays.”

There you have it! With a little prep, you can ensure that your makeup stays put no matter the weather.
