Move over, “Awkward Black Girl”; Issa Rae is in her flirty era. On Oct. 17, the actor attended the Elle Women in Hollywood celebration wearing a nostalgic bubble ponytail hairstyle that you’ll want to re-create immediately.
Celebrity hairstylist LaRae Burress created the look by pulling the star’s hair into a high ponytail. However, instead of slicking back all of the hair, the left side was sectioned into overlapping twists similar to the “designer cornrow” technique that is trending this summer. Then, “bubbles” were added throughout the length of her ponytail. The finishing touch on the look was crystals in varying sizes, which Burress distributed all over Rae’s head.
Bubble ponytails are incredibly easy to re-create and jazz up a traditional updo hairstyle. If you’re wanting to try the look for yourself, one step in the process is absolutely paramount: using two ponytail elastics to start the look. “I use two because the first elastic gets stretched out while securing the ponytail, so the second elastic is extra support and gives you more lift from the head, which you want for this kind of ponytail,” Mark Townsend, Dove celebrity hairstylist, previously told POPSUGAR. Then, to get the bubbles, add a new elastic at different lengths throughout the ponytail and pull the hair in apart with your fingers. It’s almost too easy. Take a closer look at Rae’s hair below.
