Just because you can’t get to a salon right now doesn’t mean that you have to take out your hair extensions on your own. Removing extensions isn’t exactly hard, but it’s often something that – like hair colour or getting a trim – people would rather leave to the pros. Since making a salon appointment isn’t an option right now, though, there are ways you can extend the life of your hair extensions until you can get to your hairstylist.
Read ahead for a few maintenance tips from Shelly Aguirre, hairstylist at Maxine Salon in Chicago.
Tip #1: Wash Your Hair Less Often
Maybe you’ve already been doing this, considering the circumstances, but this is a good reason to skip the shampoo. According to Aguirre, washing your hair less helps to keep the bonds of your extensions attached. If your scalp feels oily or has product buildup, consider using a dry shampoo instead.
Tip #2: Don’t Pick at Your Extensions
Try to keep your hands out of your hair as much as you possibly can; the oil from your hands may transfer to your hair, making it a lot easier for your extensions to slip.
Tip #3: Don’t Panic If You Experience Shedding
It’s normal for hair to shed, as a person can lose anywhere from 50 to 150 strands of hair a day. Since the protein bond is attached to your hair, you will experience some extension loss.
Tip #4: Sleep on a Satin Pillowcase
Satin pillowcases are easier on the hair, and they help reduce breakage because they don’t cause as much friction. If you don’t have a satin pillowcase, you could also sleep in a satin scarf or bonnet for the same protection.
