In May 2021, Dua Lipa attended the BRIT Awards in London rocking a towering beehive that was reminiscent of the late Amy Winehouse. Just a few weeks later, Sex Education star Aimee Lou Wood attended the BAFTA TV Awards wearing a similar style, albeit Wood’s beehive had a little less height.
The hairstyles of these two women prompted us to reconsider the beehive as a modern-day ‘do that can easily be rocked for your next event. Created in 1960 by Chicago-based hairstylist Margaret Vinci Heldt, the style quickly become synonymous with celebrities like Audrey Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot and Aretha Franklin.
More modern references of the beehive include Marge Simpson’s blue ‘do in The Simpsons and Adele in her 21 album era. Of course, we can’t mention the modern beehive without paying tribute to Amy Winehouse’s effect on the popularity of the beehive in recent years.
From the towering beehives to the more subtle updo’s, here are some of our favourite celebrity beehive moments, from Andra Day to Camila Cabello.
