Barbie beauty went viral in 2020 with the annuoncement that Margot Robbie would be stepping into Barbie’s Mattel-approved kitten heels for Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie.”
The original #Barbiemakeupchallenge of 2020 was a little confronting.
The origianl “Barbie” challenge was gruesomely with tongue in cheek. TikTokers used special effects makeup to mimick the work of a plastic surgeons. Which was fair enough, few are born with Barbie’s perfect snub nose, saucer eyes and delicate cheekbones. Actually, nobody is born with them. Barbie is plastic and fantastic, after all.
With the Barbie trailer officially here, we can see Margot Robbie rocking a slightly more au natural, but still preternaturally flawless look on set. This means a new run of Barbie beauty tutorials are hitting our “For You” pages. We break down our favourite, brought to us by Aussie-creator Brandon Scott.
Barbie Beauty a la Margot
In Australian makeup artist and TikTok-er extraordinair Brandon Scott’s Barbie tutorial there is plenty of candy-pink #nofilter fun to be had.
Barbie isn’t a #coolgirl, and Brandon explains that this look is all about layering, layering and then… layering concealer, powder and… three bronzing and contour products. As you’ll see, it works.
Step 1: Complexion

First, start with a strong contour and highlight. Makeup by Brandon starts with MAC skincare to get his skin “popping” then uses the Rare Beauty, Always On Optimist Illuminating Primer ($49) for “glass” barbie skin, and the Armani Luminous Silk Foundation (inspired by Kylie Jenner’s makeup artist Ariel Tejada).
Step 2: Contour, Contour, Bronze and Blush

First Brandon gets “snatched” with Charlotte Tilbury, Hollywood Contour Light Wand ($55) before adding a dab of Nude Stix, Cherry Blossom Babe ($57) for a glossy pink cheek.
Under eyes are given a lift (we don’t know how Barbie looks this wide awake with her 150 day jobs but somehow she does it) with Hourglass, Vanish Airbrush Concealer ($60) which he describes as “like silk on the skin.”
For a truly lifted and longwearing look, Brandon uses plenty of powder. He reaches for Fenty, Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Setting Powder ($51) “baking” with a triangular puff for a perfect smooth, synthetic complexion.
As mentioned, contouring is everything for Barbie. After layering Fenty Beauty, Sun Stalke’r Instant Warmth Bronzer ($52) over where he placed his cream contour, Brandon carves out his nose, eye socket and temples. Then, a sheer wash of Gucci Beauty, Poudre De Beauté Éclat Soleil Bronzing Powder ($120) for the iconic Barbie bronze.
It wouldn’t be a Barbie look without popping pink lips, so after contouring his lipliner with yet more Charlotte Tilbury contour, Brandon layers Mac, Glow Play Lip Balm in “Sweet Treat” ($34) a nude pink, with a spot of Nudestix, Cherry Blossom.
Step 3: Lashes, Brows and Lids

Brandow sets his brows in place with Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Freeze Styling Wax ($40). He notes that Margot’s 1950s style Barbie brows are actually a little closer together than you might expect. He adds some fine hairs with a few strokes of an (undisclosed) brow pen.
Barbie’s liner is slayed with MAC, Brushstroke Liner ($46), before her doll-like lashes are created with Fenty, Hella Thicc Volumizing Mascara ($34) and Gisel Lashes from Bocaj Beauty ($12) cut in half. We hadn’t heard of the affordable brand, but we’ll be adding them to cart. A swipe of Stila, Glitter and Glow Eyeshadow in “Rose Gold Retro” ($42) and Barbie is ready to party.
