Leave it to Jennifer Lawrence to rock flip-flops at one of the year’s most glamorous events. On May 21, the actor wore a pair of black thong-style sandals under her red Christian Dior Couture gown at the Cannes Film Festival, where she attended the “Anatomy of a Fall” and “Bread and Roses” premieres. Her sensible footwear was only briefly visible when she lifted her dress to descend the Palais des Festivals stairs, but one photo was all we needed to remind us that comfort is key, no matter your surroundings.

Lawrence’s casual shoes provided quite the stark contrast to her silk crêpe dress, which featured a ruffled neckline, corseted bodice, full skirt, thin straps, and matching shawl. With input from stylist Jamie Mizrahi, she kept her accessories to a minimum, simply wearing a zigzag Tiffany & Co. diamond necklace and her emerald-cut engagement ring. Earlier in the day, Lawrence wore a gray knit Dior dress and silver sandals – heeled ones this time – at a photo call for “Bread and Roses,” a documentary she produced.

Wearing flip-flops on the Cannes red carpet wasn’t just a relatable move on Lawrence’s part – it was also wise, given the star’s clumsy track record. She’s tripped at award shows in the past, most memorably stumbling up the steps while accepting the 2013 Oscar for best actress.
