All hail Vanessa Hudgens, the queen of Coachella.
As the celebrity photos begin to emerge, we can’t help but notice her absence this year. Coachella is not the same without Hudgens’ iconic multiple-outfits-a-day energy.
But thankfully, nostalgia is calling. Remember back in 2013, when our Tumblr feeds were full of Hudgens with her then-boyfriend, Austin Butler, swanning around Coachella hand-in-hand?
It was a simpler time. It was a time of felt hats and no TikTok. It was a time of stacked bangles and Vampire Weekend. It was a time for handmade Australian patterns on rompers.
If you’re a V-Hud fangirl like me, you might remember her gorge red romper from this particular Coachella. But, did you know it was from an Australian brand?
made by Byron Bay born label Spell, Hudgens’ romper was created using one of their very first hand-drawn prints, called the Desert Wanderer.
“Our Desert Wanderer print became a community favourite from the very start, and over the years we’ve had people beg us for a re-cut,” Spell Head of Brand, Mel Carrero, tells POPSUGAR Australia.
“The romper in particular was an overnight sell out, after festival style queen Vanessa Hudgens wore it to Coachella in 2013.”
Being a new brand at the time, they weren’t used to things selling out, so couldn’t help but notice when this red jumpsuit sold out overnight. Everything made sense once the photos of Hudgens emerged, styled to perfection and worn to Coachella in 2013.
“Ten years on, we’re finally doing a limited re-cut with deadstock fabric we’ve held onto all of this time — we announced it on our Instagram last week and the reaction has been so heartwarming — so many people telling us they still have theirs or they wished they’d got it or perhaps they have one but they need a new size ten years on!”
So yes, they’re bringing the romper back. The exact one Vanessa Hudgens wore to Coachella in 2013. Plus, a reimagined play dress and robe in the same print.
