If you love books as much as you love movies, then 2023 is set to be a very big year for you! As much fun as it is to imagine our favorite book characters in our own minds, it’s equally thrilling to see books made into movies.
2023’s slate of books becoming movies will include a wide range of stories, from new takes on iconic classics to adaptations of relatively recent bestsellers. The coming-of-age favorite “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” is coming to the big screen, along with the children’s classic “Harold and the Purple Crayon.” The recent string of Agatha Christie adaptations continues with the eerie “A Haunting in Venice,” and Alice Walker’s seminal “The Color Purple” is getting a fresh take, translating the award-winning Broadway musical adaptation into a film musical. And, of course, we’ve got the would-be blockbusters, including the hotly anticipated “Dune Part Two” and the “Hunger Games” prequel “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.”

"The Cabin at the End of the World" by Paul Tremblay
Tremblay’s horror novel centers on two dads and their daughter whose idyllic vacation at a secluded cabin is interrupted by a terrifying home invasion. Soon, they discover that this is no ordinary crime, and their captors try to convince them to make a devastating choice in order to prevent an impending apocalypse – or is that just a cover story? The film adaptation, renamed “Knock at the Cabin,” is directed by horror icon M. Night Shyamalan. Jonathan Groff, Dave Bautista, Ben Aldrige, and Rupert Grint headline the cast.

"The Black-Eyed Blonde" by Benjamin Black
Liam Neeson stars as the brooding private investigator Philip Marlowe in “Marlowe,” the upcoming film adaptation of Black’s neo-noir novel. Based on a character originally created by famed detective author Raymond Chandler, the story follows Marlowe on a case in the 1950s. A glamorous woman hires him to find her ex-lover, but he soon discovers that this one man’s disappearance is only the beginning. Neeson is joined by Diane Kruger, Jessica Lange, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, and Alan Cumming in the movie’s cast.

"Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret" by Judy Blume
Generations of girls have grown up with Blume’s iconic novel about growing up, dealing with puberty, and figuring out who you are. After her family moves to the New Jersey suburbs, Margaret tries hard to fit in with her new friends, forming a secret club to talk about all the things they can’t tell anyone else. The one thing that separates her from the other girls is Margaret’s unique take on religion: she doesn’t go to any church, but she secretly “talks” to God about everything in her life. Abby Ryder Fortson and Rachel McAdams star in the film.

"Text for You" by Sofie Cramer
The romantic dramedy “Love Again” is an adaptation of Cranmer’s novel, which has already been made into a German-language film. Mira, a woman grieving the sudden loss of her fiancé, begins texting his old phone, not realizing that the number has already been assigned to someone else: Rob, a journalist who’s surprised and touched by the heartfelt messages. Oh, and Celine Dion plays a pivotal role in the plot! Priyanka Chopra and Sam Heughan star, and, yes, Dion appears as herself.

"Harold and the Purple Crayon" by Crockett Johnson
The beloved children’s book tells the story of the ever-creative Harold. When he goes for a nighttime stroll with his trusty purple crayon in hand, Harold draws himself a whole series of thrilling adventures that stretch the imagination. Zachary Levi, Zooey Deschanel, Lil Rel Howery, and Ravi Patel are set to star in the movie adaptation.

"American Prometheus" by Kai Bird & Martin J. Sherwin
Director Christopher Nolan is back with his latest epic: “Oppenheimer,” based on the true story of J. Robert Oppenheimer and the biography by Bird and Sherwin. The film traces the life and career of Oppenheimer, an American theoretical physicist who is widely credited as the “father” of the atomic bomb developed in the Manhattan project – and who subsequently became one of the loudest voices against nuclear proliferation. Cilian Murphy stars as Oppenheimer, with an enormous ensemble cast including Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Benny Safide, and Josh Hartnett.

"Dracula" by Bram Stoker
There have been countless adaptations of “Dracula” over the years. This time, it’s one particular section of the book that’s inspiring the 2023 film “The Last Voyage of the Demeter.” Starring Corey Hawkins, Aisling Franciosi, Liam Cunningham, and David Dastmalchian, the movie retells one particular episode from Stoker’s novel, where a ship bound for England suffers mysterious disappearances and the presence of the infamous vampire himself.

"Hallowe'en Party" by Agatha Christie
“A Haunting in Venice,” adapted from the novel “Hallowe’en Party,” will be the third movie in the series of Christie adaptations starring Kenneth Branagh as the famous detective Hercule Poirot. In this tale, Poirot is recently retired from the crime-solving business, but when a guest turns up dead at a séance, it’s up to him once again to find out the truth. Branagh also directs, with an ensemble cast co-starring Jamie Dornan, Tina Fey, Michelle Yeoh, and Jude Hill.

"Dune" by Frank Herbert
Two years after the first half of the epic saga hit HBO Max and the big screen, “Dune Part Two” continues the story of Paul Atreides, the Fremen, and other forces battling for power on the desert planet Arrakis and beyond. After going against his mother’s wishes to join the Fremen, Paul sets out to bring peace to the chaotic planet and avenge those who hurt his family. It’s all set against the backdrop of a terrifying potential fate for the whole universe, and Paul may be the only one who can stop it. The enormous cast includes Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Javier Bardem, Florence Pugh, Austin Butler, Léa Seydoux, and Christopher Walken.

"The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" by Suzanne Collins
The prequel to the hit series “The Hunger Games” goes back decades in the history of Panem to narrate how one boy grows up to become the fearsome authoritarian dictator, President Snow. Here, he’s an orphaned young man trying to excel at the Capitol Academy in order to take care of his family, only to be surprised at the conflict he feels when he bonds with a tribute he’s assigned to mentor. Tom Blyth stars as Coriolanus Snow, with Rachel Zegler, Hunter Schafer, Jason Schwartzman, Burn Gorman, Peter Dinklage, and Viola Davis rounding out the cast.

"The Color Purple" by Alice Walker
This version of “The Color Purple” is an adaptation of an adaptation, based both on Walker’s novel and the 2005 Broadway musical adaptation. The story centers on Celie, a young Black woman growing up in the American South in the early 1900s. Over the years, she survives terrible abuse, finds (and loses) love, searches for her sister, and slowly discovers her own incredible strength. The movie cast includes Fantasia, Colman Domingo, Taraji P. Henson, Corey Hawkins, Danielle Brooks, H.E.R., Ciara, and Halley Bailey.
