Kelly Rowland Wears a Futuristic 3D Dress With Stomach Cutouts
Kelly Rowland‘s dress matched the red carpet at the Los Angeles premiere of “Babylon.” On Dec. 15, the “Motivation” singer stepped out in an elaborate, cutout gown by Iris van Herpen that boasted tiers of texture and volume.
Rowland and her go-to stylist, Kollin Carter, chose look 13 from Iris van Herpen’s spring/summer 2021 couture collection, named “Roots of Rebirth.” After a quick glance at the full line, it was easy to see the collection’s fungi-inspired theme reflected in Rowland’s gown. The texture of the skirt featured flowing fabric that draped down onto the floor, resembling outstretched roots. Across her abdomen, a series of vine-like cutouts created a red crisscross pattern that crept across the waist of her skirt. Meanwhile, the gown’s 3D embellished collar and boa-like sleeves gave the dress a simultaneously rigid and soft structure.
“The Dutch designer explores the rich, yet deeply fragile interconnectedness of an unfamiliar world, the enigmatic fungi empire and the life-bearing fine threads of mycelium,” the collection’s statement reads. Across the 21 looks from the collection, “a mosaic of fine-edged liquescent gills were 3-D embroidered onto expandable lace, lasercut to parametrically reveal fine details of skin between amethyst hued fibre.” In Rowland’s case, these laser cutouts could be found woven across her chest and abdomen.
Given all the intricacies of this look, Rowland let the gown speak for itself. With Carter’s guidance, she accessorized lightly, opting for dainty, silver hoops alongside her pixie haircut.
