Kinder Recalls 2 Types of Chocolate Easter Baskets Over Salmonella Concerns
Ferrero North America has issued a recall on two types of Kinder chocolate baskets ahead of Easter. On April 7, the chocolate company announced that the Kinder Happy Moments Chocolate Assortment and Kinder Mix Chocolate Treats basket are being pulled from shelves due to concerns over potential salmonella contamination. The products were manufactured in a facility where Salmonella Typhimurium was detected.
There have been no reports of illness due to the Kinder products in the US, but Fererro voluntarily decided to recall the baskets as a precaution after 119 confirmed and 28 probable Salmonella Typhimurium infections linked to the chocolates were reported in eight different countries. The US chocolates were manufactured in the same facility that produced the contaminated products.
In a press release, the chocolate company said, “Ferrero deeply regrets this situation. We take food safety extremely seriously and every step we have taken has been guided by our commitment to consumer care. We will continue to work cooperatively with the Food and Drug Administration to address this matter.”
The recall affects Kinder Happy Moments Milk Chocolate and Crispy Wafers Assortments with a best-by date of July 18, 2022, and Kinder Mix Chocolate Treats with a best-by date of July 30, 2022. The affected products were distributed by Costco, BJ’s Wholesale Club, and Big Y Supermarket. Other specification details about the recalled Easter baskets, including the UPC codes, can be found on the Food Safety News website.
