It's Definitely Still Too Early to Know About How I Met Your Father Season 2

It’s been eight years since How I Met Your Mother ended, and now the spinoff series, How I Met Your Father, is finally arriving on BINGE. The original HIMYM ran for nearly a decade, so naturally, we’re all wondering if the new series will get a long run, too. For now, though, even a second season of How I Met Your Father isn’t a sure thing.

Like most streaming platforms, Hulu historically takes a little while to decide whether or not to renew its shows. For instance, look at one of its recent hits, The Great, which has had about two months between each of its seasons airing and the next season being officially renewed. Since How I Met Your Father has a 10-episode first season, with episodes airing weekly instead of all at once, it’ll be at least mid-March before the season even ends. Based on that timeline, it’s likely we won’t hear anything official until late spring or early summer.

It’s also worth noting that How I Met Your Father has had a rocky road just to get to its first season. This iteration is actually the second attempt at a spinoff or reboot of HIMYM. Back in 2013, when the original series was wrapping up, the original creative team announced plans for How I Met Your Dad, which would have been mostly unrelated to HIMYM but shared the overall plot device. Greta Gerwig was slated to star as the main character, Sally, with Meg Ryan voicing “Future” Sally in the same way that Bob Saget voiced “Future” Ted. However, following conflicts between CBS and the creators over the pilot, the series wasn’t picked up and never aired.

Even this iteration of How I Met Your Father (which may have some connections to the original show) has taken a while to get off the ground. Cocreators Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger initially put this project on the back burner after being promoted to co-showrunners on This Is Us. It took until 2021 for the official series order and season one production to happen at Hulu, with Aptaker and Berger still at the helm. The version currently airing on Hulu features Hilary Duff in the lead role of Sophie and Kim Cattrall as “Future” Sophie.
