If you’re like us, you spent the 00s obsessed with the high drama of Gossip Girl. The fashion, the scandal, the mystery and the memes, we honestly couldn’t get enough back then and we’re so hyped to see what a 2021 take on the Upper East Side drama has to offer.

Of course, there are parts of the original series that haven’t aged too well, like for example, Chuck Bass and Blair Waldorf’s toxic relationship being endgame despite the 500 or so red flags along the way, so the new series being reworked and rebooted for a new audience and a new generation sounds like a great plan to us.

The new Gossip Girl has been developed by showrunner Joshua Safran, who was a writer and executive producer on the OG show.

It’s been nine years since good old Dan Humphrey decided to shut down his original blog with a final XOXO, but the reboot sees a new pack of private school kids introduced to the social surveillance of Gossip Girl.

With a whole new level of social media to contend with, we’re sure the series is going to pack a punch as it explores how social media has evolved and shifted since then, and the pressures that come along with being a teen online in 2021.

Rather than a blog, Gossip Girl is now an anonymous Instagram account. Think Deux Moi for rich teens, basically.

The series stars Jordan Alexander, Eli Brown, Thomas Doherty, Tavi Gevinson, Emily Alyn Lind, Evan Mock, Zion Moreno, Whitney Peak and Savannah Lee Smith.

“Our group of friends have known each other since we were babies,” says the trailer’s ominous voiceover. “We have trust, and history.”

We see our new group of Upper East Siders return to the iconic steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, observing a new girl from afar. As she waits for the lights, one of them observes that “she’s not from here”. The girl is then invited to hang out with the elite group, and from there, it’s all montage, baby.

We see fashion shows, steamy hook ups, parties and relationship drama, before they all get the alert: Gossip Girl is back.

“Did you miss me?” Gossip Girl says, voiced by Kristen Bell once again. “This just in. There’s a big secret amongst the ruling class at Constance Billard. XOXO, Gossip Girl.”

Despite being a new take on the concept, Gossip Girl 2.0 remains based on the bestselling novels by Cecily von Ziegesar and the original show, developed by Josh Schwartz & Stephanie Savage, which ran from 2007-2012 on The CW.

Gossip Girl will premiere on July 8 on BINGE.
