A “Cruel Intentions” Reboot Is Finally Happening
In the age of endless reboots, you might be surprised to learn that the classic ’90s teen movie “Cruel Intentions” has had a tough go at getting a revival off the ground. But finally, it’s all systems go.
On April 5, TVLine reported that Amazon has greenlit an eight-episode “Cruel Intentions” series adaptation of the 1999 film, which saw a set of diabolical stepsiblings – played by Ryan Phillippe and Sarah Michelle Gellar – attempt to seduce Reese Witherspoon‘s character into breaking a pledge not to have pre-marital sex she made in an essay published in a national magazine. Amazon reps did not immediately respond to POPSUGAR’s request for comment on the series.
The news comes after two TV reboots of the movie previously failed to make it to air. First, Fox filmed two episodes of a prequel series called “Manchester Prep” that was canceled before it went to air and reworked into a direct-to-video sequel called “Cruel Intentions 2.” Then, in 2016, NBC pulled the plug on a follow-up series to the original film even though Gellar was attached to reprise her role as Kathryn Merteuil.
Read on to learn everything we know about the highly-anticipated “Cruel Intentions” Amazon series so far.
Amazon’s “Cruel Intentions” Series Reboot Plot
According to TVLine, the show will be about two ruthless stepsiblings in Washington, DC, who will do anything to stay at the top of the Greek Life hierarchy at their college. But when a hazing incident threatens to topple the Greek system, they set out to do whatever it takes to hold onto power, which includes seducing the vice president of the United States’s daughter.
Amazon’s “Cruel Intentions” Series Release Date
The “Cruel Intentions” series doesn’t have a release date yet, but it likely won’t be until late 2023 at the very earliest, as filming is set to begin in Toronto in June, according to TVLine.
Where Will Amazon’s “Cruel Intentions” Series Stream?
At the moment, it’s unclear which Amazon streamer the reboot will live on. According to TVLine, the show was in development for the streamer’s free service, Freevee, but it may ultimately end up on Amazon Prime Video instead.
