Sony has finally announced the PlayStation VR2, the next-generation virtual reality headset for the PS5, and it looks like a way to get into VR gaming. According to the PlayStation Blog, the PS VR2 will take “VR gaming to a whole new level, enabling a greater sense of presence and allowing players to escape into game worlds like never before.” It’s got great specs that rival the Oculus Quest 2, the current leading VR headset, and introduces some nifty features that aim to make your experience in-game feel more realistic. Finally, PS5 players will be able to experience VR games the way they’re intended to be played.
The main focus of the PS VR2 seems to be to immerse you in what you’re playing. The headset has a small built-in motor that vibrates to allow you to feel your character’s heart beat during tense moments, whooshing air as you rush past objects, or the thrust of a vehicle speeding forward. The new VR controller uses the same haptic feedback and adaptive triggers found in the DualSense controller to help you feel something when you pick up an object or throw a punch in-game.
“With the headset on and controllers in hand, players will feel a heightened range of sensations unlike any other – thanks to the creativity of the game worlds being built by our world class developers, and the latest technology incorporated into the hardware,” Sony said.
It’s also got impressive specs. The PS VR2 uses OLED screens at a display resolution of 2000×2040 per eye to offer 4K HDR. In comparison, the Quest 2 uses an LCD display at 1832×1920 per eye. The PS VR2 also features eye tracking, which lets you interact more intuitively with what you’re seeing in the game.
Unfortunately, the PS VR2 will need to be plugged in, which might be the biggest drawback compared to the Quest 2. But if that’s the only downside, the PS VR2 is still a great option for PlayStation users who want to get into VR gaming. No release date or price has been announced for the PS VR2 yet, but Sony promises more exciting news soon.
As extra incentive, the PS VR2 will launch with an exclusive, Horizon Call of the Mountain. Set in the Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West universe, Horizon Call of the Mountain will take players deeper into Aloy’s world.
