The New Ghostbusters Game Lets You Team Up With Your Friends to Zap Spirits and Slime
A new co-op Ghostbusters game is releasing this year and, if the announcement trailer is anything to go by, it’s going to be a whole lot of fun to play with your friends. Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed is being made by Illfonic, the studio behind Friday the 13th: The Game, so we already have a pretty good idea of what the gameplay will be like. Illfonic specialise in asymmetrical co-op games, and in this case it’ll be four people playing as a team of Ghostbusters, with one person playing as the ghost.
“As a Ghostbuster, join with other Ghostbusters to chase and trap ghosts in museums, prisons, hotels, and more, and capture the ghosts before they can fully haunt the areas,” reads the announcement trailer. “Or, as the Ghost, hide, sneak, surprise, scare, and of course, slime Ghostbusters and civilians until the everything has gone completely spooky. Use trickery, deception, and Ectoplasm to gain the upper hand and drive the Ghostbusters out.”
Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed will also feature some of the original Ghostbusters cast. Dan Akroyd and Ernie Hudson are lending their voices to the game as your mentors. They’ll help your character — a new Ghostbuster you’ll create for the game — learn the ropes in the iconic NYC firehouse and Ray’s bookstore. The firehouse will act as your base where you can level up your character and their gear, including the proton pack, particle thrower and ghost trap. You can customise your character and their gear as you play, and you can also customise the ghost for when you take on the Ghostbusters team as the enemy.
A big difference between Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed and Friday the 13th: The Game is that the new Ghostbusters game will be family-friendly and much, much funnier. It’s being written by comedians Elyse and James Willems from the video game variety show Funhaus. It’ll also have more of a story than Friday the 13th, which we can’t wait to experience between missions.
The Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed release date is Q4 2022. It’ll be available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC via the Epic Games Store. Watch the announcement trailer here:
