This Australian-Made App Uses AI Technology to Check Your Teeth and It’s Completely Free
Life is busy so it’s understandable if you struggle to find the time to go to the dentist. And, while this handy new app doesn’t replace a dentist — especially if you’re experiencing dental pain or discomfort! — it is helpful for those who might be dealing with budget constraints or geographical access to the dentist.
These very reasons inspired epidemiologist and former public health academic, Dr Kyle Turner, to create Pearlii — an app that uses artificial intelligence to improve oral health. The investor-backed startup, which is based in Melbourne, allows you to access fast check-ups and oral health education (that is free!) using just a smartphone and a mirror.
The Pearlii app works by taking five photos of your teeth from different angles with your mobile phone camera. Then, the app scans your dental photos and generates advice tailored to your individual teeth. While the process is completely automated, it still creates oral health advice based on your results.
If the app picks up any major issues with your teeth, it allows you to book a dentist appointment with ease in the app, which has over 3,000 dentists. The app also lets you track your oral health and earn badges for sticking to a routine with brushing and flossing.
The accessibility of the Pearlii app (thanks to the fact it’s free and is accessed via smartphone) makes it perfect for those who don’t live in metro areas, which is what prompted the creation of the technology.
“I grew up in a poor family in country New South Wales, Australia, where access to dental services was almost non-existent,” Dr Turner said. “Fast forward to today, and although I now have good personal oral hygiene, a lot of damage has already been done: tooth decay, fillings, fractures, internal staining, extractions… Very painful and very expensive!
“I created Pearlii so that no other child grows up with bad teeth or poor oral health, especially as we now have the technology available to prevent it happening.”
