When you need a little energy boost, you probably reach for a coffee. While coffee has its place in a healthy diet (as it has many health benefits), it is possible to overdo it with the caffeine. Instead of grabbing a cup of coffee, why not try eating a food that is known for its energy boosting qualities?

There are a number of foods you probably eat everyday that positively contribute to your energy levels and you don’t even realise. The need time you need to inject a little vitality into your day, try opting for one of these foods.

Bananas

Bananas are the perfect energy-boosting food thanks to the combination of complex carbs, potassium and vitamin B6 but the best part of the humble banana is its convenience. You can literally carry a banana with you at all times and munch on it when you need a little energy hit.

Sweet Potatoes

Not only are sweet potatoes downright delicious and an extremely versatile veggie, they’re also packed with complex carbs and fibre which is digested slowly by your body and provides a sustained release of energy.

Water

While water isn’t technically a food, it’s something that you’re already consuming each day and it might surprise you to learn that water is super important for your energy levels. Water is required in a number of cellular functions and when you haven’t consumed enough, can leave you feeling tired and sluggish. Even if you’re not feeling overly thirsty, continue to consume water throughout the day to keep your energy up.

Almonds

A handful of almonds never go astray when you’re feeling tired. These nuts are filled with protein, fibre and healthy fats that keep you feeling satisfied while also putting a pep in your step.

Yoghurt

Yoghurt might not seem like a traditional energy-boosting food but because the carbs in yoghurt are simple sugars, they are easily broken down by the body into energy. While this might sound like it could lead to a crash in energy levels, the protein in yoghurt helps to slow down the digestion of the carbs, making it a more sustained release.

The delicious chickpea-based dip also contains tahini (made from sesame seeds) as well as oil and lemon. This combination of ingredients makes it a great source of energy thanks to the complex carbs, fibre and healthy fats.
