The Most Popular Australian Baby Names in 2020 Are Very Different to 50 Years Ago
Leonardo DiCaprio, also known as Romeo (or was that a lothario), famously once said, “Oh, what’s in a name?”. Okay, so maybe it was actually Shakespeare who coined the phrase, but I think we can all agree Leo was much hotter saying it in the Baz Luhrmann version of Romeo + Juliet.
And as any woman named Karen last year (and this year, most likely) can tell you — there’s a lot riding in a name. Meghan Markle can tell you the exact same thing, seeing her name used from ‘Hurricane Meghan’ to ‘Megxit’.
Your name is something that makes you — not necessarily unique, as many people have the same name — but it makes you you. Quite literally, in one sense; when you’re a baby your parents have 60 days to register your birth and to name you.
Just like aesthetics, hairstyles, beauty looks and more — names trend. Will cheugy, the shag, and soft girl makeup be the go-to in a year or even a few months? Probably not! And will the most searched for baby names of 2021 even be on the top 10 list in a decade, two, three or four? Also probably not!
But, just to be sure, we took a trip down memory lane. All the way back to the 1970s — where the original shag haircut came from. It’s time to see which names have staying power, and which dropped right off the list, with the help of the NSW Government website.
