Bringing a baby into the world is a beautiful thing. Bringing a baby into the world is also piled high with unexpected admin. From birth registrations and birth certificates, immunisations to monthly milestones, daycare, and back when travel was allowed, a passport or two.
And one of the first things to tick off that admin list after giving birth? Naming your bub. As it turns out, you don’t have to name your child while in hospital, or even within the week of their birth. In fact, within Australia, you’re allowed up to 60 days to register your child, including their name.
But choosing a name… that can be tricky. For some inspo, you can always look at the top baby names for the year prior, which the NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages released in April 2021.
There are always some givens on the top baby names of 2020 list — last year saw Amelia, Olivia and Charlotte top the list of girls’ names, whereas the boys’ list saw Oliver, Noah and William take out the top three spots (the exact same as the year prior).
Maybe, like Mrs George from Mean Girls, you’re not a regular mum but a cool mum — and you’re looking for a cool name for your future offspring. This time, it might be better for you to turn to Nameberry, who calls itself “the world’s most complete resource for baby names.” It’s also a pretty good resource for predicting what names are about to take off.

Luna isn’t too much of a surprise, being as so many of us millennials were brought up on Harry Potter, which featured the pixie dream girl Luna Lovegood. And, factor in Chrissy Teigen and John Legend’s daughter, Luna.
Fashionable Latin favourites, like Aurora and Atticus, are also names that are on the rise internationally.
