Charlie Cox Returns as Daredevil in “Spider-Man: Freshman Year” Series on Disney+
Charlie Cox is staying put in the MCU after his surprise appearance in “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” Not only is the actor returning as Daredevil in the upcoming Disney+ series “Echo,” he’s also lending his voice to an animated version of Daredevil in Disney+’s “Spider-Man: The Freshman Year.” The streamer announced the news at Comic-Con on Friday, July 22, where they also revealed details on other upcoming animated Marvel shows including “I Am Groot,” “X-Men ’97,” and “What If…?” season two.
Cox first played the lawyer-turned-superhero, Matt Murdock, in Netflix’s “Daredevil” series back in 2015. However, the Marvel Netflix series wasn’t considered part of the MCU until recently when Marvel Studios acquired the Netflix Marvel shows, bringing them back into the MCU fold. Since then, folding Daredevil back into the existing Marvel canon has appeared to be a priority for Marvel President Kevin Feige.
Even though it’s an animated series, “Spider-Man: The Freshman Year” marks a big step forward in making Daredevil a major player in the larger world of Marvel. Additionally, the show will also serve as a prequel of sorts for Spider-Man, since it’s set prior to the events of “Captain America: Civil War,” which officially welcomed Tom Holland’s Spider-Man into the MCU. As reported by Deadline, writer and executive producer Jeff Trammell promised fans at Comic-Con that the new animated series will be full of surprises as well as nods to Spider-Man’s early comic-book days.
“I don’t want to spoil anything, but expect the unexpected,” Trammell told attendees. Read on for more details about what you can expect when “Spider-Man: Freshman Year” premieres on Disney+.
