HBO Is Developing a “Game of Thrones” Sequel About Jon Snow
HBO is giving viewers more “Game of Thrones” content. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a “Game of Thrones” spinoff series focused on Kit Harington’s Jon Snow is in development at the television network. Harington is attached to return.
“Game of Thrones” viewers probably don’t need a reminder of the show’s controversial ending, but series eight wrapped up with Jon Snow deciding he wasn’t going to try to claim the Iron Throne, despite the fact that he’s a Targaryen by birth, had served as the King in the North, and lots of fans wanted him to. Instead, after assassinating Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) – who was his lover, his aunt, and his queen – he decided a fitting punishment was to go live in the North, beyond The Wall, with the wildings and his friend Tormund Giantsbane (Kristofer Hivju). It’s unclear if a sequel series would change that ending and send Snow south again (maybe to see the siblings he abandoned), or if it would focus on Jon and Tormund’s wild hijinks in the snow. It’s also possible other actors whose characters were alive at the end of “Game of Thrones” could appear.
Harington has mostly laid low since “Game of Thrones” ended in 2019, save for joining the MCU in 2021 with “Eternals,” in which he played Dane Whitman. Whitman’s role in that movie was not large, but the ending scenes did set things up for the character to take on the mantle of Black Knight and to appear in the upcoming movie “Blade” starring Mahershala Ali as the title character.
HBO has been very interested in making more “Game of Thrones” shows since the original series ended, despite fans’ anger toward how the story wrapped up. This August, “House of the Dragon” will premiere, taking viewers back 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones.” HBO also has other prequel projects in development, including one set 90 years before the show all and focusing on the knight Duncan the Tall and his squire Egg. In George R. R. Martin’s books, Duncan the Tall is an ancestor of Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie).
For now, fans will have to wait for more details on exactly what Jon Snow is getting up to in Westeros since the series ended. He will probably, once again, be very sad and very cold.
