As with any week for POPSUGAR Rush, Starr and I try to adhere to only one rule: don’t make every episode about Taylor Swift, and don’t make every episode about Beyoncé. We realise how much these two dominate pop culture and our algorithms, and we want to give you a taste of the pop culture you missed! Sure, we fail almost every single week, but the intention is there.
That was until last week when Taylor Swift and Beyoncé were standing arm and arm, big smiles across their faces, on the red carpet at the world premiere of The Eras Tour Movie.
Everyone, may I present to you MY Roman Empire.
There was no way we weren’t going to talk about this. Not only is the image itself worthy of any great museum around the world (is there something even fancier than The Louvre?), but it represents a full circle moment in one of the longest-standing celebrity beefs in recent memory.
Are Taylor Swift and Beyoncé Friends Now?
Whether Taylor Swift and Beyoncé were ever friends is hard to say. How do two people keep up a relationship when you’re the two busiest people on Earth? But the last time we saw these two have a public interaction that reached this many eyes, it was under completely different circumstances.
It’s easy to remember the 2009 MTV VMAs as the catalyst for Taylor Swift vs. Kanye West, a feud that has played out very publicly for over a decade and will likely never see resolution again. But this award show also gave Beyoncé the perfect opportunity to not only do something incredibly kind but seize a moment and re-centre herself in it in the best way possible.
After West declared “Single Ladies” as one of the best music videos of all time, Swift’s moment was no longer hers. So, when Beyoncé stepped up to accept her award for Video of the Year, she had the chance to give Swift’s moment back to her, and she seized it.
Now, 14 years later, Taylor Swift is no longer the artist just breaking through the mainstream. Both she and Beyoncé are certified music and pop culture legends in their own right, and seeing this moment of support after all these years (especially off the back of two of the biggest tours we’ve seen this millennium) will always be worth talking about.
