Stop Right Now! A Documentary on the Spice Girls’ Rise to Fame is Coming to Channel 9
Get ready to spice up your life because in an Australian television exclusive, Spice Girls: How Girl Power Changed the World is premiering on Monday, December 6 on Channel 9 and 9Now. The three-part documentary features rare archival footage of the girl group’s incredible rise to fame, who went from being ordinary women to global superstars.
Rewinding time to 1994, the documentary shows the Spice Girls from an insider’s perspective. From the inception of the girl group to their catapult to stardom, the series contains footage of auditions and vintage interviews.
Also starring in the show is Chris Herbert, the group’s former manager and the reason behind why they existed in the first place. After releasing their first single Wannabe, the Spice Girls went on to become overnight sensations. The catchy song hit number one in 37 countries and their fan base grew exponentially.
But the newfound fame came with its drawbacks, as Emma Burton, Geri Halliwell, Melanie Brown, Melanie Chrisholm and Victoria Beckham faced intense scrutiny and sexism every day.
Overcoming scandals and gossip, the group was a defining part of the ’90s. The documentary takes us on a journey from the very beginning all the way to their demise when Halliwell left in 1998. The story of these outspoken, strong women is wrapped in nostalgia, and the series will highlight the most controversial and empowering moments of their careers.
It’s been 25 years since their debut album, and it’s time to explore just how they paved the way for women today.
